    There's often significant heat attached to these power bricks - does that pose a problem?

    Also it necessitates a rather short connection between the laptop and power brick, which will hamper those far from a socket.

    It shouldn't be a problem, the PSU won't get hot enough cause problems with the USB electronics.

    Well, the USB cable connecting this to the laptop could be up to 5m, so there is no reason this couldn't be the same length as current power cables. the thing is, you are likely to been the hub to be fairly close to where you are working as opposed to metres away.
