Love the idea..dont make the watch into a phone, but make it the companion to the phone..something like this is perfect for just checking messages/twitter/4squared etc without needing to get out your phone. It solves the input issues of phone watches whilst still offering what is for me the major benefits.
Now if only apple would make one..i'm not a fan of the android OS so this exact device is no used to me, but an iOS version would be great. It's what the new nano should have been! Ah well I can wait a year for one I guess
I can see it happening too...the new nano is the perfect form factor for this - terrible as an ipod imo but would suit this functionality well
Release alongside iPhone 5 next june? Price tag of $99/£99?
I'd buy one. But then i'm a muppet
The hype would be through the roof, but of course it would only work with iPhones - and it would cost at least £170
I love the idea of this: most of the time I get my phone out of pocket to check whether I've had missed calls, texts or emails - so much easier, and more subtle, to just look at my watch
Plus since it apparently syncs and displays the time as well, you can even use it was a watch!!!
Sony have made similar watches for a while, just the first one that's Android'd. Pretty surprised by this actually given how poor bluetooth on Android is. I've got a Sony MW600 bluetooth headset, the track name and other info came up fine with my one W850i phone but not my new X10 Mini Pro.
How would this be better on an iPhone? Considering there is such a range of handsets on android, Sony are aiming at a much wider audience, not just the narrow-minded Apple fans....
I just hope Sony have some form of patent protection so that It doesn't get copied! Personally I have never had issues with Bluetooth on android, although I suspect most peoples issues are on pre-2.0 handsets.

NOTHING TO BE SEE HERE, MOVE ALONG PLEASE....
:: of all the things i've lost i miss my mind the most ::
It's a watch - what difference does what's "under the hood" make if you're not going to see inside. And given that it's a Sony you can pretty much guarantee that there'll be no need to look inside (no updates).
edit: Ah wait, I just viewed the video - you're right, it's more than just a display.
Oh don't get me started on that - it'll be a "Personal Information Manager" or somesuch. Heck, my missus is getting real tired of me yelling at the current Apple ads something like "FaceTime my butt - it's that bl**dy video calling I tried a couple of years ago, but without being able to do it outdoors like I could then!"
As you can guess, I'm an Apple user, but not a fan.
Back to the Sony - now I've seen the video I'm quite impressed. Especially at £70 retail. If they can get that down to £55ish then I'll probably buy one - justify it as a piece of exercise gear, (and I'm assuming that wristband has a sensor in it to get pulse data - hope I don't blow it next time that Apple ad is on).
You mean like the Sony X10i that they're using in the video - Android 1.6! (unless they managed to get a beta of the 2.1 update)
Main issue is the battery drain of Bluetooth and running data all the time in Android. In an ideal world having this setup wouldn't mean recharging all the time
Yes - the SE product blog is full of comments complaining about them release an android product which needs 2.1 when their flagship android phone is still on 1.6! They had better get on and release 2.1 and 2.2 sooner after!
Still good price for such a clever device.
Edit: X10 owner!
Awesome - its a great idea and something I'd be keen on - but somehow a 'watch' that runs out of battery by lunch time strikes me as a bad idea...
btw, thats based on how badly bluetooth seems to hammer my nexus one's battery life, scaled to an even smaller battery!
Maybe Sony have finally admitted defeat and are actually intending this for Android phones other than theirs, (or a cynic would suggest that this is designed for the phone after the X10). Totally agree with the 2.1/2.2 comment.
Edit: yet another X10 owner - does it show?
Never mind that - what scares/amuses me is that folks seem to be getting all "warm and fuzzy" about Microsoft. I can only assume that there's some other company that's now the "dark side" ... Apple?
Oh and I don't think the X10 owner community see Sony as a 'good guy' - ask one and you'll probably get a stream of invective in the reply.
