Re: News - LimeWire finally forced to shut down servers
A remnant of my school life killed off :(
Re: News - LimeWire finally forced to shut down servers
LimeWire was still going :o
Re: News - LimeWire finally forced to shut down servers
Was limewire actually any use nowadays or was it just a propogation tool for malware and viruses?
I'm asking this because nearly every PC I've been asked to look at which has had a major malware infection has had this program installed as they've been trying to download mp3 files from here.

I couldn't resist!
A suitable last farewell to Limewire, no? :D
Re: News - LimeWire finally forced to shut down servers
Next step, go after torrenting, I expect.
Re: News - LimeWire finally forced to shut down servers
id hardly say its a next step, been a current one for a while! I would say sites like mega-upload and rapidshare would be more of a next step.
Problem with torrenting is it can and is used for legitimate purposes like linux distros and game updates. Much harder to kill off alltogether as its actually a very good technology, they can only really hope to kill off the sites which host massive number of copywrite infringing torrents.
Re: News - LimeWire finally forced to shut down servers
Was inevitable, but I do agree...every computer I came across with problems had Limewire installed. Hopefully this will finally stop my sister! :o

Know that feeling, that little green icon gets a groan out of me every time. Always there when it's a virus and I always go out of my way to make sure it will never work again on that machine again to save myself being back fixing it a few weeks later.
Glad it's dead tbh.
As for torrents they're a whole different animal. Very good technology as mentioned already and is actually used for legal things on a large scale. The underlying tech is far more prevalent than people realise. Stopping piracy on torrents, that's near impossible now. Even if you could remove every single pirate tracker(sites like TPB and Isohunt), it wouldn't stop the torrents at all, they're a matter of convenience, rather than technical requirement. So a different approach would be needed to fight piracy on there.
