When Microsoft will learn to start again?
Everything what we have seen is dating back to XP.. Rewrite and start again at some point maybe?
I'm sure it would have resulted in most stable and secure OS.

Well they've been earning enough too for quite some time.
Except for ahem:
WDM, (this was the one that caused so many issues for their partners, they changed their mind (again) at the 11th hour so to speak).
DWM,
Next Gen TCP/IP,
GINA,
WDS->WS4
UAC,
KPL,
WIC,
APM
These are the ones that jump out at me as a developer, who you know, actually understands what the hell he rants about!I've still yet to have an issue with any of my home PCs, even when I've been clocking the hell out of them, Steam or something else normally gives me the warning sign first.
Security wise, there is still a lot to do, key 3rd party apps need better love from the main platform vendor and it wouldn't heart MS to make the marketplace handle updates and in exchange for charging money, actually vet some of them, allowing people to have high priority.
They are definately doing a good job with IE now, its just been MS its only a matter of time before they down tools and say "job done". Worse for the devs who do not know if they will be saying we MUST use WPF,Silverlight or HTML5 next week. This is really anoying as someone who is ment to be quite a specialist in WPF, how do I hedge my bets you directionless people.
But the main question this news brings is what? What is going to be new in 8? The Vista kernel is definately market leading (read up on VAX vrs Unix), what are they doing to do?

Lets hope it isnt skinned in the usual vista/7 vomit style theme.
I just hope they do the pre order deals again, I will happily change my OS every 3 years at £45 a go.
So far the evolution has gone well, vista was solid and 7 was a tweaked vista so all is happy in the world.

I just hope the slate/touch changes don't make it hard to use with a keyboard and mice. I'd still rather use them than a touch screen in day to day use.
Because there is a line between obsillencse and improved reliability.
As 3rd parties improve their drivers, as the 1st party patches known bugs.
The value propersition can improve up to a point, as the software matures.
That said if you adopt windows 7 on launch day, you will have had it a year longer and a years more use than someone who buys it today will have the option of.

In which way may MS have to make a bold may I ask (in relation too the article) ?
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.
my fear is it is just big talk to the shareholders about going towards a cloud OS. Boring!
However I would love the idea of something like their singularity project been taken forward.
Vista showed how bad drivers generally are to blame for most of the serious software errors, this could be stopped by a micro kernel and managed drivers all running in non ring 0. This is something MS have been spending dosh in, and some of their research peeps have written and shown interesting code projects, but on the whole MS has a great track record of ignoring what their research team does.
However in doing so they would probably break a whole load of backwards compatibility and the only way to get it in the manner consumers would demand is some amazing virtualisation system the likes of which we've never seen before, basically like parallels but not a massive bag of monkey poo.
That is quite unlikely, as who would want to build for the new platform no matter how stable and 'better' it was. As such they would have to some how provide user mode backwards compatibility. This is quite improbable imho, but I'd love to be proven wrong.
So quick summary, the guys blowing smoke.

QFT...I also would love the idea of taking singularity forward, imo its one of the best thing to come out of Microsoft Research in recent years (even better than surface tbh, although thats pretty cool too )
My main worry is also that this "radical step" will be into a cloud OS..they have laid down the framework for it and have spent quite a bit of time trying to push us into developing for their current cloud solutions like Azure, but I'm not so sure that we have the right network connectivity and systems in the world for it yet.
In principle, if implemented right, I do like the idea of cloud computing, however there are all kinds of technical and in this world, privacy challenges to be overcome before it can really be a reality. The more I think of it the idea of having a fully fledged windows install sitting on a remote server that I can login to and access all my things from anywhere in the world really does appeal..and would give a nice use for BT Infinity when I move next month hehe..but will they get it right? Or just go for a half arsed version like current vendors offer..we'll see in the next few months. I'd put money on that being windows 8 though.
Oh good god - to echo TheAnimus - did you miss the whole Vista reboot? MS tried to shore up XP to make Vista and gave up, resulting in massive delays and a substantially different Windows with whole swathes of completely new code (and major pain because of it). The new driver model alone caused Vista to be shunned by all and sundry..
XP is Windows 7 is it?
