Try Mass Effect 1 first - you can pick it for <£10 now and see if you like it would be my advice. They are both tremendous games (and ME2, while better, is not *that* much better). ME1 seemed a bit longer to me too.

i have ME1, fell out of love with it after it robbed me of some achievements and my 2nd playthrough on GF's account wasnt as fun.

Fair enough - I rarely find a second playthrough ever worth it. ME2 is more polished that ME1 and gets rid of some of the annoying sections (notably the land exploration in a vehicle) which makes it a more consistent game, but the story is not quite as epic. I'd say it was certainly worth a tenner:

Wow, what Bleeping idiot's sorted this catagory? Starcraft 2 came out this year, and the best strategy game was PvZ?

Yeah would of missed the cut, The awards are for May 2009 to May 2010. With the exception of the one to watch game.
