Looks like a giant pile of hyperbolic crap, to me.
Oh, you mean like Sony already did with the Timescape app on their Android phones some time ago (and I'm sure there's other variants out there in the market already), as shown in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tIz0ejCQUkQuote:
He (Mark Zuckerberg) was at pains to stress that this isn't an ‘email killer' and is not even limited to facebook.com, rather it's an attempt to unify all written communications: SMS, email, IM and Facebook messaging.
Well it won't be my "default written messaging product" - don't see the need for Facebook, and it probably won't work on Android nor Linux, so I'll pass. :yawn:Quote:
ambition is clearly for it to be the default written messaging product for both PCs and mobile devices.
But it's shiny and it's got an iPhone app ... so it can't be "crap" now can it? (I'm starting to like this "sarcasm" thing)
I agree with your summation, but I'm sure the bleating masses will flock (pun intended) to it as the next great thing. Only plus I can see for it, is that maybe it'll persuade Google to look at Wave again - by reputation this was a pretty promising product.
I rarely use the facebook site or client any more. I've got tweetdeck on my android and thats all I really want from facebook. I will not be using this. I've love gmail currently and see no reason to change.
@crossy - I have timescape on my X10 and it is currently removed from my home screen and killed by my task killer as it is so poor!
Are you joking? What do you mean, it 'won't work on Linux'? If you're on your computer, you access it via the website! And if you're not, you'll be able to use it via SMS or the IM client of your choice.
You sound like you have no idea how this actually works, but just wanted an excuse to complain about Facebook favouring the iPhone over Android.
Twidroyd for me (although for how much longer is debatable - because it's got slower and splattered with ad's).
I didn't say I liked Timescape - merely that it's prior art for this "best thing ever". Although to leap (arthritically) to Sony's defence, they have said that the 'droid 2.1 update speeds Timescape up a bit, plus we're still supposed to be getting an update to that at sometime in 2011.
Like you, I don't tend to use Timescape that much - although it can be useful as a demo for non-X10 owners.
My understanding was that the SMS, and possibly the IM, accesses were pushed updates only - in the manner of a Twitter client. Not the full access which, as you point out, will need a web browser (or other client?). I'm assuming, of course, that this new app won't be specific to a particular small set of browsers - as that would be moronically stupid.
Guilty as charged - then again since I have no need nor desire for Facebook there's not really that much incentive for me to waste time trying to find out details at the moment. I'll probably have a scout around once the service is established - for academic interest.
Actually no - I'm totally unconcerned what Facebook support, or don't ... remember I said that I don't use it. :p
No, what I was picking up on was that "There is integration with SMS, as well as a special iPhone app launched today" - notice no mention of anything for Android (nor Blackberry or Symbian if we're talking about smartphones). Why single iPhone owners out for special treatment?
If it is "to be the default written messaging product for both PCs and mobile devices" then why concentrate on only one OS? Of course if they mean that the iOS app is only the first to launch, and the others are imminent then that's fine, and I'll go back to sleep ... ;)
