Smart move. Opening up this type of opportunity develops the market and MS should benefit. For an example of how tying down the platform can work out, look at what happens to the PS2's MCA.
I do find it more tempting to buy one if I can plug into my PC.
Still not interested. Also, I'm a little confused, is Microsoft going to punish evil homebrewers using their hardware they way they want or not?

maybe kinect will work with windows 8 as they show facial detection and the ability to sense when people move from the PC and lock the system.
I think its a little complicated, as MS afterall sell the xbox's at a pratical loss, that is the classic console model, sell them with little or not enough profit to be worthwhile, then nickle and dime them on the games. Mr Gillette figured that why have someone spend upwards of £10 on a razer when they need blades every month.
As such I think it was their natural reaction when hearing about this to call out the gaurd, however I think someone now realised that its not going to detract from their games revenue and they make like $100 on each unit so who cares!
Sounds a bit like embarrassing backpeddling with how little time it took to hack the Kinect for Open Source use to me!
Still the fact they won't bother (for now) to go after people using a Kinect other than with a 360 is good news perhaps, as it might lead to some interesting projects popping up on sites like hackaday.com :D
They've realised it'll help sales, not hurt them,
so add a little PR spin that it was their intention all along ;)
Personally I'd like one for PC, even though I don't have an xbox !
This reminds me of lego mindstorms, when they were first hacked, some of the people in Lego wondered if they should change it so prevent people from using other applications, however they decided that people have bought it can they can play with it however they like.
the reason was they didn't wanted to screw it. Microsoft is lazy nowadays
