Well my previous profession was a burglar and so I can tell you.
Back in the old days when we had to wade through 10 feet of snow to go to school, we had to actually go to the house and look at it. We would monitor when the resident's habits, the type of locks, the type of glass windows, neigbour's activity, etc.
Now, we just use Google Maps. It even gives me the direction to get there.
However, it does stuff up sometimes, because the house image on Google Maps was like 1 year old and they just installed stuff I can't see on Google Maps (e.g. a lock, cameras, a backgarden extension, a new dog) and I didn't know. Oh, we don't usually do due diligence and so we don't know when the people inside were or not, we sometimes bump into them having dinner, parties, doing it, etc.
That's why I am in the slammer posting this now.
edit- lots of spelling mistakes!
