Cloud OS - I'll believe it when I see. MS has promised many future features in recent OS and yet never delivers (WinFS anyone?).

I can't help but feel it will just be another increment OS upgrade as all recent windows OS's have been. Microsoft are just too careful about upsetting the applecart!

I call BS on most of these rumors for the following 2 reasons.

• 2012 is too soon.
• 3d interface has no business value right now
• microsoft have never forced consumers to make any types of hardware changes

I can't see a "cloud-based OS" from selling well to the public - too many drawbacks, not least of which being the need to have a network connection surely.

3D UI - why? The only way I could see that working is if it was hooked up to some Kinect-like device that let you drive it in 3D. Otherwise surely all you've got is a 3D presentation being driven by 2D devices (mouse, other than the Gyration type ones, and I'm not sure whether a keyboard counts as 2D, maybe it's actually 1D). Plus if that's provided then you're assuming that everyone's going to get 3D capable monitors and video cards, otherwise it's going to stay a niche feature at best, and a worthless gimmick at worst.

On the other hand a UI that "learns" the way that I want to do things sounds like something that I'd like to see very much. Especially if it's clever enough to be customisable - the same way you can stop Office "improving" your typed text.

Or how about borrowing an idea from other folks and allowing the system to spot tasks you do frequently and offering to turn them into pseudo-commands - sort of a GUI version of Linux scripting (and yes, I know there's VBScript too for Windows).

Personally though, the "information" given looks suspiciously like guesswork.

I'm guessing by 3D they don't mean stereoscopic cinema, they mean 3DFX, GeForce, Radeon, DirectX, gaming "3D" (you know, the OLD meaning) and we'll see spinning cubes and more effects, rather like Compiz etc. Business value? Maybe not - but neither does Aero - however pretty OS looks good and is a visible difference to make people feel like they got upgraded.

A cloud version will only be 1 version, probably business targeted, an evolution of VDI etc - there is little chance it'll be pushed at consumers, certainly not widely.

That'd be nice - but if they said that then no-one would believe them - remember that we've been promised a replacement for NTFS (New NTFS?) for sometime now.

Of course, if it wasn't for the fact that Oracle ( ) has a lot of claims, then I'd say that ZFS was worth looking at. Realize that in addition to the Oracle factor that NIH syndrome would make this unattractive, but it's a nice daydream that MS would end up with a lot of good PR (in addition to a good filesystem) and in return we might get the benefit of some of MS's GUI design talent.

Of course, as an IBM techie, JFS would be nice, but that has zero chance of coming to pass.
