As I said in the first bit you quoted me on though - "This isn't an OS issue" and I was replying to "Microsoft should pull finger out of their a*** and add proper parental control to Windows". It's clearly in context of that

Windows isn't the issue here. If Apple and Linux based distros don't have their own filtering software there, that's their choice (or downfall, if you look at it in that light).
You can even go further - what about mobile devices?

But the fact that we're even trying to shift the blame onto the OS makers / Browser developers is worrying. There are plenty of services out there that help filter out porn from browsing, I'm really failing to see why this should be a OS level / browser level requirement, never mind higher on up at the ISP.
If Microsoft are including this at all, it should be considered a bonus.

One final point - if the govt are that bothered about the impact of porn on the kids then why in the name of Gladstone's ghost are they phasing out CEOPS in favour of some nebulous "National Crime Agency" which bundles in a whole load of other duties
Because the credibility of CEOP is at a low. So low in fact that the Court of Appeal has had to listen to cases: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukne...-evidence.html

    Poor old teenagers.

"Mum, can you phone up BT and ask them to turn the porn on please?"

Good point about the mobile devices - if my kids are anything to go by then the govt should be looking at porn-blocking those FIRST (not that my kids are into porn - afaik). The Linux distro's are pretty well provided for - it's pretty much point-n-click to add filtering to them. And I'm sure I saw a couple of distro's that ship with filtering in as standard.

Oh, I just so agree. The whole idea is laughably stupid, unless it's a trojan horse for other things that they're intending to do.

Hadn't realised that CEOP was supposedly doing such a bad job, in which case maybe it'd be cheaper to "reform" it rather than scrapping it in favour of some FBI-lite.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

and the rest, literally 1min read:

My god you really are some ravid fanboy aren't you!

They have as mentioned had built in controls in IE, which are quite useless because its not really in most vendors intrest to make their website compliant with them. Also there are a veritable plethora of third party application solutions for filtering web content, none of which work 100% of course.

The point is if your worried about what your kids will find on the internets, then don't let them use it un-supervised, end of.
