The official Sandy Bridge launch is now only a few weeks away and laptops and desktops sporting the new processors are expected to be widely available from the start of the new year.
By 'start of new year' do you mean 'available to buy in January! :D' or 'available to buy in late May... :(\'?
Also laptop parts are generally introduced later than desktop parts so is this release going to buck the trend? I\'m looking to buy a new laptop for next semester so if laptop sandy bridge is going to be introduced very soon then I\'ll be prepared to wait a month...

I'd stay wait for the release & for the reviews come out then you can gauge the two, maybe the i7 will come down in price & save you some pennies?
The i7 rocks! I see there are a lot of people are selling there i7 + X58's & waiting for this...
For me, I'm staying with the i7 as its a beast. I think the i7 will hold its own & will be better in some scenarios & benchmarks...

I suppose you've got a point there. I guess I'll buy most of my components and buy the CPU last.
Do you think the new SB will be compatible with the Rampage III Extreme mobo?

Firstly, it definitely won't. The sockets are all changing for the new generation.
Secondly, Intel is keeping the X58 platform for the high-end/enthusiast market for quite some time. That's to say that a replacement won't be launching at the start of 2011.
Lastly, though, SB will be a major upgrade, so if you can hold out, I'd say wait. i7 950 is a good CPU, for sure, but SB will be worth waiting for.

All I'll say is don't buy anything before January 5th. All will become clear then.

Oh I thought so. It's just that I heard that the new SB will be backwards compatible, thats all.
I guess I'll be waiting then before building my new rig. I just hope that the new SB won't be expensive :]
