    Provided the motherboard and BIOS aren't doing something they shouldn't (like making assumptions about what you put where) then yes, you can put anything in that 16x slot. Unlike AGP, PCIe shouldn't care what you put in, the only limitation is the number of lanes supplied by the chipset and how they are portioned up.

    There are restrictions for multiple graphics cards, but that really isn't relevant in this discussion
