it will never work anyway, as if you have "naughty !" ps3 then you can go out and get another one and register/log on as new user and still have access to network and keep your moded ps3.
all been done with original xbox before, and didn't work for microsoft then either.
Only way to stop it is for Sony to send an Emp signal down the line to your house that would
bug out the Ps3 and everything in your house bar the wifes rabbit !!!!(uses batteries i believe)

It's just pathetic. I can't bear people trying to instigate punishments in lieu of genuine criminal punishment, because they think the law is insufficient.

After months of dealing with cheats on MW2, I have no compassion for any hacker.

Well, banning PSN access is a good move from Sony. It won't really have a huge effect since forcing people to update their firmware before being able to use PSN really has the same effect (the newer firmware renders the current gen of mod chips useless)..but hey this is a nice extra step.

There are very good reasons why people might want to put Linux on a PS3 (hint: They make some of the most cost effective distributed computers you can buy for certain tasks), but given that you're willing to dismiss them as 'idiots' within 5 words into your sentence, I'm not sure if you were actually looking for a serious answer, or if you're just trolling.

The sensible thing with regards to console with online capabilities has always been to have an unhacked unit for online play and a hacked unit for homebrew/emulators, that never EVER goes online. I don't see why everyone's making such a big deal about it all - this kind of thing was news about 3 years ago with the Xbox 360 so it's not like we're seeing something shocking or surprising...

Well I imagine Sony don't really care about anyone using their subsidised hardware to run Linux (regardless of how life changing it could be) as they don't buy games/add ons so Sony are losing money on them.

That's not to say removing OtherOS was right, hopefully Sony will pay for that in court.

I'm for the banning I'm afraid. I tried to get to a 'sitting on the fence' stance but I just can't.

I realise there is a homebrew community, I enjoy tinkering with my gadgets as much as anyone but let's be reasonable. The vast majority of people want to use these 'hacks' purely to play games they do not own & have downloaded. I don't see how anyone can truthfully say that isn't true.

It's not to say I forget the 'needs' of the legit homebrew community but you agreeed to Sony's terms, a PS3 is a luxury not a right, if you break said rules (regardless of whether you agree with them) then tough, go find some other hardware that lets you do what you want, take your money elsewhere & never buy another Sony product, that's consumer choice. They don't brick your PS3 they remove online access to Sony services that you have to abide by certain rules to access.

I do really want to be against Sony as removing OtherOS (although not affecting me nor the majority of users) was shocking, I can't believe they think they can get away with it. But I just can't unless someone offers a better, more reasonable thing Sony could/should have done under the circumstances (bearing in mind corporate/shareholder needs etc)

They're not. But they are saying that if you want to use their services (PSN) then you have to abide by their service agreement. Just like you abide by Hexus' rules when using Hexus' services.
