Re: News - Sony debuts refreshed 13.3in VAIO S Series notebook

Unfortunately, I don't trust the longevity of Sony laptops. Failing fans seem to be quite common, and it's exactly what happened to my SZ series laptop after barely 2 years.

I would want one but for the Sony badge, the increasing reports of failures among Sony laptops and the inevitable price you'd pay to have the failure handed to you.

Shame, as it looks to have all the bases covered.

    1) I'm guessing that your DV3 didn't cost four figures and

    2) it would have been covered by warranty anyway, so probably just a duff part you received.

This looks like a nice upgrade from my aging CR series
although i'm not too keen on sony's logo on the top of the laptop...

On paper, Sony's premium range always get the spec and portability aspect maxed (the Z series is a perfect example). I'd rather have something fail within warranty, though I must admit that it worries me a little that my friend's HP dm4 also lasted about 2 months. I wonder if the Envy range is built better.

Nah, I have to send it back every 2 months to have the fan replaced. My friend has a HP laptop too with a crap fan design...

And it cost me nothing - I got it for free as a warranty replacement for my Sony Vaio! Which cost £1500...

Looks very nice, those keyboards are good to use, same as on my VAIO F12.

As for failing I still have an original SZ1 used in the lounge for web browsing thats 4 years old, totally battered (it has been to the US, Australia, and New Zealand plus countless other places) but is still going.

I also never understand why people pay >£1500 for a laptop and don't buy the extended warranty for an extra £150 to know it will be fine for 3 years. I wouldn't buy it for a £500 laptop no, but when i'm parting with over a grand I want to know i'll get at least 3 years out of it and factor it into the price.

Re: News - Sony debuts refreshed 13.3in VAIO S Series notebook

I've yet to have a sony laptop fail, but in my ownership I've only ever have a Clevo chassis fail.

When you consider that the P series has been slung in a 75L rucksak and gone all over, including chained to the back of a motorcycle for a week, thats not bad.

However I have heard from quite a few people that there were some that were marketed to businesses which suffered fan failure quite readily.
