A data connection would be nice, but I can't see myself wanting to make a call underground - it's too damn noisy! / awkward.
But the mugging thing is a bit silly, never really thought of that while using a phone on the tube while it's on a stretch of rail overground.
Nearly everyone carries some kind of tech, I don't think a mugger would need to see it, to know that.
Unless he see's that it's not a Nokia 3210, and get's tempted by a 4.3" screener.

Its really noisy on the tube, and if people are trying to talk into their phone.... good luck.
would be better if they just allowed data services.

Not sure how this mistake was made, but it stood out like a soar thumb> "the 2010 Olympics."
I don't find it to be a problem tbh, if it's possible to provide people with the option then I feel it should go ahead. People can turn their phone on silent or off if they are that bothered.
+ 1 to just data and no phone
The whole mugging argument is balls, even though there is no reception down there i regularly see people with their phones out playing on games or using it as an MP3 player anyway. If your really worried about it you could just turn it off or put it on silent and let calls go to answer machine anyway.
Mobile network in the tubes, just in time for the Olympics, I can see the terrorists rubbing their hands together now...
don't worry T-Mobile will save the day by not letting anyone make or recieve a phone call when inside Zone 1.

If a third of the people are worried that having a mobile network might increase the chance of theft, I think the survey is pants and bollocks.
and by a chinese supplier.. so then not only will our comms be monitored by our own state, but by another as well!
yeah its not so much to your own device, its being contained and having to listen to those loud self importants with nothing to say bellow into their phone and disturb everyones peace....
data only, text alerts.. ok but 50+ potential constant beepings may also be quite irritating!
not to mention it may potentially facilitate coordination of terrorist activities
Will be no more annoying than half of the conversations you have to listen to on the tube! At least I'll be able to keep myself amused by surfing the net rather than being stuck with nothing to do except read the ads or play Angry Birds for the gaziliionth time.
