Re: News - Windows 7 SP1 hits the airwaves

Tried two 32bit Home Premium installed systems and a 64bit Pro one this morning, (after I read the article), and none of them reported this service pack was available when I ran Windows Update. However, they did report a Silverlight update was available - and when I applied that one, the Service Pack miraculously (?) appeared (along with a pair of mandatory and one optional KB numbered patches).

It's not the quickest to download ...

Oh, and one of the KB patches failed on my 64bit install - but that's something about WPS services (which I don't use) - so I'm not too worried.

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

Re: News - Windows 7 SP1 hits the airwaves

Can't install it on my PC (64bit pro) as it says something is missing. Of course it doesn't bother to say what so I can try to manually fix it. Looks like I need to reinstall Windows which I can't be bothered to do. So I'll give it a miss for now...

Re: News - Windows 7 SP1 hits the airwaves

Well my SP1 install has totally borked a load of my games including GTA IV (which i was playing fine yesterday pre SP) and generally anything that uses GFWL (The marketplace client won't even load up without crashing now)..

Seems another person is having an identical problems to me here.. (Same crash errors linking to the GPU, which for me is at stock) http://forums.testdriveunlimited2.co...ad.php?t=36682

I have tried every single fix going at the moment, including reinstalling .NET, C++ redis, DirectX, GFWL (Every version and update going), video drivers the lot. Nothing works. So i'm looking at a reinstall now.

So personally i would say update at your own risk! I certainly wish i didn't.

EDIT: Seems Micro$oft messed up (again). Before you install the SP install this:
    (x64) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...3-D2C47C6FCFFC
    (x86) http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...B-1FC9EA40F69F

EDIT 2: What a suprise, uninstalling SP1 fixed all of my problems. This might be limited to EVGA or 500 series nVidia cards as i have a 570 SC and the person in that thread has a 580 SC.

Don't suppose you used some sort of tool to customise your Windows install? There have been known issues with this stripping out components which can cause service packs to fail to install.

It would be unlikely that you would, given that it's mostly a ball of patches.

Re: News - Windows 7 SP1 hits the airwaves

    Worked fine here...
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Downloaded, but I can't be bothered to install it. If I need to reinstall Windows for any reason, I'll use it then.

Installed one 64-bit and one 32-bit versions last night. No problems so far, but I haven't given it a real workout yet.

Only problem I've noticed so far is that it reset all my video file associations to WMP. Other than that, it was as transparent as I expected.
