I do want this phone
And it's only about £25 more than the listed price for the SE Arc - and definitely worth the extra outlay for the extra power/capability etc.Motorola's powerful dual-core handset would be cheaper than Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play handset
I'm pretty neutral on Motorola phones, but if they can deliver at this price, and the Atrix lives up to the reviews so far, then Moto have probably got a hit on their hands.
Hmm, I wonder how much it'd cost to buy me out of 11 months of contract when this launches
Never mind that, sell your old phone and use your sim on this one (sim-free phone). Generally it'll cost you something silly like 90% of what you would have paid to buy you out so it's just not worth it, assuming you can get the Atrix unlocked.
There is a fair chance I'll be doing that myself.
It's being released in May according to Mobiles.co.uk (a.k.a. Carphone Warehouse).

But possibly available from eBay and the like from March 1st
Darn, I was kind of hoping that it'd be something reasonable - say £200 - because I'm really, really, really unimpressed with Three (e.g. they took my monthy fee but this month didn't bother to give me the corresponding allocations - e.g. data, texts, etc - okay I'm no where near running out, but it's the principle!)
I'm very sure that the Atrix will be available unlocked - maybe being naive but if Expansys are advertising same then they must be pretty sure they can get it. http://www.expansys.com/motorola-atrix-207852/, failing that there's always http://www.kingofgadgets.co.uk/produ...ile-phone.html especially if you're of the iPhoney got-more-money-than-sense-so-need-latest-shiny-thing persuasion.
Hmm, good point - the phone I had before my current one came from eBay, and it served me well. I suppose as long as you're careful (no dodgy imports from US, HK, or China) then it's a possibility.
Looking around and there's quite a lot of folks now doing accessories for the Atrix, only concern I've got is the quoted price of that neat laptop-style dock - £350! (according to http://www.clove.co.uk/motorola-atrix-laptop-dock). That's about twice what I'd be willing to pay as top-dollar, heck that's more than the price of a reasonable spec netbook - which marks it as instant failure in my book. Hopefully the "price to be confirmed" caveat means that the final price will be a lot less eye-watering, (although the PCMag.com review of the Atrix quotes AT&T charging US$500 for the laptop dock, so maybe that is the proper price?!).
Oh, and I came across this interesting mini-review http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2380800,00.asp about how easy the Atrix is to disassemble. I particularly like the idea that the battery cover has instructions printed on the inside.
That would be a totally unreasonable price for what is literally just a chassis, battery, screen, and keyboard/trackpad. It's more than many netbooks, as you say, and they have to fit in a CPU/mobo/graphics/HDD etc.. so if that's the price, go shove it up your **** Motorola :/
If expansys are charging £479.99 then the real price on most shops is probably around £350 - expansys overcharge like mad for anything (I always wonder how they sell anything!) and are never a reliable source of retail pricing information.
So on that basis it's pretty cheap for a phone with those specifications..not enough to tempt me away from ios but still, looks + sounds nice.
Sorry, curiosity got the better of me but if Expansys is a no-no (I already figured out myself that you're paying a premium for fast/first access) then where are the best places to get unlocked phones - or should I just stop being lazy and get myself a Google Shopping search done...
Come to the dark side my son ... (Cue Star Wars Imperial March tune)
In most cases its cheapest to buy a PAYG version of a phone, which are often unlocked anyway from certain networks (google a bit first to find out!), and if not then to unlock it yourself afterwards.
If its an android or WinMob device then its easy to do yourself (for free), if its an iPhone you can buy them direct from apple, if its a nokia then unlocking is easily available for £5 from a market/phone shop.
Failing that there are still many legitimate phone sellers on ebay - just make sure you use paypal incase of problems (they find in the buyers favour 99.999% of the time, regardless of the complaint!)
They are expensive, they usually continue to chare full retail price well after a device is launched. But they do have a good supply chain, so are often the first to get handsets, especially the high end ones. I've never bought from them before, so I cant comment on their customer support, but for being an established company with premium prices I would expect them to be good. All these things combined means they probably make a shed load on first release premiums from those that don't care about price.
