As much as I HATE to agree with Apple - they're right, and I pointed this out in the post here about google handsets doing NFC - There is no agreed standard for NFC yet.
So instead they're going an unexpected route and developing their own.. oh wait.
Also, that 2015 prediction is quite something given the current NFC sales.. which are approximately $0, unless I am mistaken?
Thought Oyster cards were NFC...could be wrong though!
Old puter - still good enuff till I save some pennies!
Then I am mistaken! Forgot about oysters![]()
Barclays' current cards have NFC capabilities, but the number of shops that can accept them are... erm... minimal, to say the least. I believe McDonalds have started rolling out NFC payment. That's about it - and seriously, who's going to pay for a big mac on their card?
I can't decide if this is a risk or a cunning plan by Apple: by holding off on NFC in their current / next gen iPhone they're almost *deliberately* falling behind Google technologically, which essentially means Google will have a year or more to try to exploit and dominate the NFC market. On the other hand, that means Google are also going to spend a year or more doing all the R&D, PR and industry schmoozing required to get their implementation of NFC adopted as a global standard, which Apple can then simply piggy back on when they think it's mature enough.
So, big risky gamble or very cunning plan?
Also Pret and Starbucks have NFC. Olympics will have NFC.
Society's to blame,
Or possibly Atari.
It's all quite chicken-and-egg, everyone's waiting for everyone else to take the lead. It seems likely that if Apple went big on NFC, developers would follow and then financial services and retailers would have a stronger reason to invest.
