Wow, 2m+ people downloading their backup browser
Because lets face it, people tech savvy enough to be this quick off the block are not primary IE users, they are FF, Chrome and Opera users who probably had the IE9 RC installed anyway and are just updating their backup.
Besides Firefox 3 did 8m

I'm exactly the kind of person you are describing. I've used Chrome since day one of it's beta release back in 2008! However, recently Chrome 10 has been so unstable! Flash crashes every 20 mins, downloads keep freezing and it's generally just doesn't feel as fast at starting up and loading pages as it used to be...
I never thought the day would come... but I've gone back to IE for my main browser! :O
Flash crashing is almost unheard of - it must be your browser!
What's shocking here is lack of Windows XP support given that 90% of Windows desktops are running XP...
Microsoft are clearly trying to push people towards the latest and greatest OS no matter how bad it is.

Perhaps, but a slightly less cynical view is that MS have already made clear, years ago, that XP support was limited or ceasing altogether, and that their revenue streams were going to be Vista/W7, so it's not too surprsiing that they don't put resources into what they regard as a legacy product. What business does?
And, after all, XP still works with IE the way it did, it just hasn't moved forward at all. If that 90% (or whatever it is) were using XP before, nothing has changed. And if they want a more up-to-date and maintained browser, well, dump IE altogether and go Firefox, Opera, etc. Oh, and that category (XP users) includes me, on all but one machine, by the way. But I'm not convinced, regarding W7, that "how bad it is" really is fair. It seems pretty good to me, and certainly better than Vista ever was (IMHO, of course).
Have you tried Windows 7 mate cause its pretty awesome, loads fast, hardly crashes, looks good and most devices are just plug and play. What exactly are you referring to when you say "no matter how bad it is"?
There are only a lot of XP machines because companies don't want to front the cost of paying for a load of Windows 7 licenses. Plus they would most likely have to upgrade their hardware to support 7, again it all comes down to what they are willing to pay.
If you look at the Steam hardware survey; 7 (64-bit) has overtaken XP (32-bit) in most popular OS and gamers are a pretty smart bunch when it comes to choosing a stable gaming platform.
XP is at about 55% last I read..

So we are seeing 40% of windows desktops, which is still almost half the internet been left out of this update. Thats quite a large segment.
And microsoft trying to push people to their latest and greatest OS no matter how bad it is is a silly comment that just shows how much jobs sucking you've been doing lately, espesually as they have no choice in moving a lot sooner due to shorter support cycle. And when it came to stick rather than just carrot for users moving, well I'll be in glass houses about that one! I've been putting off bug fixes in an older version, it helps users to get behind the newer version of our software if they know that version has all the bug fixes.

With regards to browser itself then yes, FF, Chrome, Opera is the way forward if you're on XP now since Microsoft is cutting off support for XP, well SP3 is the only supported flavour from what I can tell. There is still quite a lot websites relying solely on IE, alternatives not always work properly so reliance on IE is still there.
I personally had very mixed experiences with W7 hence the slightly negative approach maybe?

Sounds like a problem with your system. Chrome 10 is nothing but plain sailing here.

I have it as my backup for times like when Hotmail recently screwed Firefox support up or the odd website that is botched.But the question is, why are people downloading IE9 as a backup browser in the first place...
Sounds like it needs a complete uninstall, crap cleanout and reinstall doing on it. I get the problem with Firefox occasionally when it's updated itself a few times, and it's addons have run a few updates, things tend to flake out. Completely uninstalling it and deleting all the gubbings it leaves behind then installing it fresh brings it back to former glory.
Can I suggest a public forum might not be a good place for a private chat then?As for perspective, the numbers for XP you threw about were wildly inaccurate as was your (frankly) silly suggestion that W7 is a bad OS (even more nonsensical compared to the fetid pile of crap that is XP). Try a bit of balance and reason and then we'll take you seriously. Till then, not so much, keep your labels to yourself thank you very much sir.
Back OT - it's time MS were allowed to move on from XP - it's not even the previous OS and it's TEN YEARS OLD ffs. IE9, much as it pains me, seems pretty good.. shocking.

Microsoft have made .net4 and Office 2010 available for XP. I dont really see the argument for not developing IE9 for XP. New versions of FF, Opera even Safari are XP compatible.
Im liking IE 9 on Vista, however.
loads of the core APIs on which IE9 depends aren't available pre-vista.
.Net 4 is actually quite old in many ways, its not using any of the new security or rendering features brought in under vista.

They could of done it - it just wasn't either in their interest (cost of software renderer development). At some point you have to move on and even MS have their limitations when it comes to throwing money at a dead cow.
