Doesn't surprise me... I've often seen folk passing their youngsters a smart phone with some kinda game or video to help shut em up. And they're pretty good at the games!

Our two eldest (10 and 8) would love a smartphone or iPod Touch. They are always on at their uncle to borrow his iphone or their mums Desire HD. They never ask to borrow my Desire though, probably because they know the answer they will get

Re: Opinions - Smartphones are becoming child’s play

Who cares, this has always been the case. Nothing to do with smartphones.

More to do with the fact that kids want to emulate what their parents does.

That's why have drive little cars, play with little dolls before etc.

Re: Opinions - Smartphones are becoming child’s play

I strongly disagree with the idea of giving a child a smartphone to 'shut them up'. Parents should be playing with children themselves, not just giving them gadget joys to play with.

Well, phones aren't beign designed for "kids to use". They are designed to be idiot-proof so everyone and anyone would be capable of operating one.

Re: Opinions - Smartphones are becoming child’s play

What I find annoying about the issue of children and smart phones is as a result, my mobile operator (three) has recently started blocking access to content and requiring me to set up a pin and log in if I want to gain access.

I am not trying to look up pr0ns, I use the default news application for my Desire HD quite often and it's consistently flagging articles as "explicit/over18 content" and asking me to set up a pin and log in, these are links to websites such as reuters, theguardian and dailymail. I don't know what the parameters for flagging these are but it seems a bit over zealous.

I use my phone as a means of finding information or refreshing my memory, quite often when I hear something on the radio for example and want more info about it I take out my phone and use google/wikipedia, for example I heard on the radio the other day that Kelly Brook was pregnant so I am thinking "who is Kelly Brook..." in goes "Kelly Brook Wikipedia" into google and it gets flagged as inappropriate.

Anyone else experiencing these sort of issues ?

As an interesting side note, I tried to phone three from my mobile when I started getting these issues and you can not get through to their customer support on your mobile phone, at least not for issues involving service problems.

How Hilarious is that ? A mobile phone provider who you can not contact through your mobile phone, I phoned two numbers went through their automated blah blah and it tells me that I must phone from another device/landline. Is this a common occurrence among providers ?

Parenting is tough but, I don't agree with those that throw these devices at children to gain some reprieve, seems to be an easy way out and in my eyes may enforce a number of negative behaviours one of which being "If I make enough noise I will get a nice new shiny".

I don't think anyone under the age of 18 should have access to a mobile phone quite frankly :/
