Prices are certainly cheaper than iPad 1 [when released]
£429 is what Apple wanted for iPad 1 and we got further £10 added after VAT rise.
£399 this time around its a bit of a drop.
Motorola is doing the same, pretty pricey for a 3G receiver...32GB Motorola Xoom is currently going for £499.99 Wi-Fi and $599.99 3G

Blimy, I could get a laptop for that sort of money, and it wouldn't be limited to Apple Apps!
I have to say that for us these are way to expensive! The average Joe on the street is not going to spend the same money on an iPad as a 1080 40" HGTV with Wireless Internet connection! iPads are still a gimic for most ordinary people.
Yes, I would lilke something like the iPad to read book/magazines/comics on, maybe even the odd video. Now for that I'd pay upto about £120 give or take a tenner. But I would want to be able to use Firefox, MS Word, and a few other Windows programs as well if it is going to be £330 or more!
The trouble with Apple is they are a bunch of Elitists. They like the fact only the well off can afford their products. They run their user base like a snobby club, and that is not something I would want to be a part of even if I had the money!
So as far as I'm concerned I'll wait for the Windows Tablet thank you very much, or just buy a lap top!
You said it in a way that would indicate no one have bought any iPads so far..
That's a lot of average Joe's out there - 14.8 millions of them prefer iPad than 1080p TV?pple released the first iPad in April 2010, and sold 3 million of the devices in 80 days.[16] During 2010, Apple sold 14.8 million iPads worldwide,[7][8][9] representing 75 percent of tablet PC sales at the end of 2010.
I'm not saying its cheap but at the same time opposition is struggling to beat Apple on price big time. Not to mention the apps.
There won't be any good Windows tablet dude, OS isn't suitable for the touch screen - simple. All the half-baked attempts failed. I cannot find the video showing Balmer struggling with one running W7...

The current tablets are expensive considering that in most cases they are not primary PCs. Most people who tend to buy them already have a laptop or desktop and either are interested in gadgets or are better off.
On top of this most tablets are subsidised by long term credit in the form of phone contracts. In most non-western countries this is not the case.
Over the next few years as they get more powerful and cheaper will they eventually be considered a primary computer.
20 million tablets were sold last year but it is still dwarfed by laptop sales overall. The success of Android is important for tablets TBH. The smartphone market has only grown so massively due to the presence of cheap Android smartphones.
A lot of non-techy and non-gadgety people I know do not have a tablet and usually will have a cheap laptop or desktop for work processing and web browsing.
Edit!!
Come to thing of it none of my techy friends have a tablet ATM.

Just about everyone I know has a laptop - but they mostly have different makes; the only duplicates are apple owners
Same with phones - everyone has a phone, but while many have androids - no two people have the same model - but I know a few with identical iphones.
It's less of the elite, more of the popular these days.
I didn't really expect the price drop to be honest - nice surprise. Still not worth the money yet though - when we get a high resolution (preferably wide) screen..they may be worth the money. For now though, still a fairly pointless as far as I am concerned.
I really wonder what Apples strategy is this year - in Agile terms it seems kind of like a 'Hardening Sprint' - solidifying the product range with small updates. iPad 2 had nothing exciting, iPhone 5 is looking like just a white iPhone..and for once no new innovation in their other sectors..at least that has been announced or rumoured.
Kind of disappointing but my bank balance is looking prettier now that I don't have an excuse to spend on a funky new (and useful) apple product hehe.
