Quite, but on a £600 device, when it happens again, 6 months later, despite its been well reported the first time, thats not good.

When they don't even put a quick fix, issue a warning its appalling.

This goes for all of them that failed. Get your crap in order next time, its not as if we don't know when it will be.

For me, it is not a big deal but it does destroy the myth that Apple "just works". Apple is just like any other smartphones.

Also for such an expensive phone, you would want to make sure it was fixed the previous times it happened I guess.

Absolutely, but we can't have everything all of the time. Having a few Apple devices myself, I know that the idea that they 'just work' is a myth, but they do tend to 'just work' more often than other devices in my experience. I.e., no device is perfect, but some devices are more perfect than others!

Boon, what iOS version are you using on your iPhone?

If you haven't upgraded to iOS4.x the alarm and clock will function correctly, it's the newer versions that are broken.

I have used plenty of Apple computers myself from MacBook Air laptops to even a dual processor Mac Pro at my previous workplaces but this attitude of works better, etc is annoying. There are plenty of Dell computers running equipment and data analysis rigs which quietly do their job just as reliably. Considering that the same OEMs are producing a lot of PC and Mac hardware it is not surprising! The difference is they are not as shiny but then in most cases they cost less too.

The biggest differences I've found, in the laptops at least, are build quality, battery life and the trackpad. Are they worth the extra? Well that's a value option that the person buying needs to decide.

I have used business class laptops too so the build quality of a Mac laptop is about what you should expect for the price as they are premium machines IMHO. In fact many of the business class laptops such as the Toshiba and Panasonic ones have reinforced screen surrounds, all metal construction and they also have impressive battery life. It is not surprising as the actual hardware in terms of processor, chipset, graphics card and RAM are not unique to either a Mac or a PC nowadays.

In fact the main thing I like about the Apple laptops is the design of the power connector which is easily the best one out there IMHO. I personally think more companies should implement it TBH. Also they are quite pretty!

Funnily the power connector design was inspired by a Japanese power connector design for a deep fat fryer!!

In terms of anti-snag. Electrically they're quite dangerous.

If a similar issue had happened at my workplace and i had deployed my code through to production with the issue still present i probably would not have a job. Call me demanding but someone splashing out £600 on a device should at least expect resolution of such a issue following the first occurrence.

    Amateurish to say the least.

I'm sure whoever is responsible probably has been reprimanded in some way. For all we know, the people involved may have lost their jobs already!

I dont get people saying they shouldnt rely on their phone to wake them up and its a daft thing to do, why exactly is that? You spend that amount of money on a device i think its perfectly fair to put some trust in its ability to make some noise at a specific time.

After using a standard Windows laptop for a number of years, and wondering what all the fuss was about, I now know precisely what the fuss was about! PC laptop trackpads just seem ridiculously tiny and unresponsive in comparison.

The nearest that a PC laptop has got seems to be the new Samsung 9 Series (an ultra-portable aimed squarely at the MacBook Air) but judging by a few reviews, it still isn't quite up to the standard Apple has set.

Mostly because my bedside alarm clock, while not faultless (perhaps a mains-supplied alarm with battery backup would be best; mine's solely battery-operated) will last for months without needing new batteries, whereas most smartphones will die within 24 hours of being unplugged (and almost all within 48 hours). So forget to plug your phone into charge one night and there's a fair chance your alarm doesn't go off.

Multiple redundancy is really where it's at, and essential for anyone where it actually matters when they turn up to work. I tend to go for a bedside alarm when I should get up and if I accidentally turn it off instead of putting it on snooze for a cheeky 5 mins I also set my phone for the latest I can leave it before getting up. Has saved me a couple of times!

Hope you are comparing the same laptops rather than the usual Apple argument of comparing cheap consumer Windows laptops vs uber expensive Apple laptop.

You should try the business laptops. IMO, Thinkpad trackpads are on par with Mac trackpads. However, Thinkpad keyboards are better than Mac keyboards. Lenovo casing are also better than Apple's.

Apple has done some good things in some areas but has been pretty medicore in other areas. Just like any other company. So to me they are not "up to the standard Apple has set". Apple hasn't set any standards.
