And dedicated PCI-E bandwidth for storage as well, very smart move given data requirements of SSDs these days. Looks like a nice evolution for servers and ultra-high end.

Wish they would call Sandy Bridge E something a bit more distinctive though - people might think they could use Sandy Bridge processors with these boards.

Ivy Bridge isn't a replacement for Sandy Bridge E (skt 2011), it's a replacement for mainstream Sandy Bridge (ie on skt 1155)

Nope, it's the 22nm shrink of Sandy Bridge (non-E). Still socket 1155.

It's not logic, it's Intel's publicly stated roadmap. Search for 'tick tock' and 'intel' if you want proof. That doesn't mean they always deliver on time or won't change timescales to make most business sense, but alternate architecture and then node process is still alive and well.

Glad to see SAS support added. I currently have an x58 board with on-board SAS and thought I was going to have to resist upgrades so I didn't waste the investment in the HDD.

This 'new' Sandy Bridge is quad channel, not dual. The 'old' Sandy Bridge didn't revert to dual channel either - it was a successor to Lynnfield, which was also dual channel.

But the target markets are quite clear - not everyone in the world is just looking for an office or gaming machine

People who have very heavy I/O requirements. Researchers, workstations, servers, etc. Generally people who use computers to.. well.. compute.

I really need it for work. Work however will continue to just buy the wrong spec entirely, and then wonder why things take so long.
