Sorry I do not know what phone you are reviewing. Given the size of screen is it the HTC Desire S (3.7") or the HTC Desire HD S(4.3). If it is the Desire HD this is a very old/slow review.
I liked Nexus due to its more technical bias, I hope this is not a sign of thing to come ?

Re: Opinions - HTC Desire HD review

I have to say, I've had my Desire HD since November now and there are a few things I'm just not happy with, mainly to do with wifi and mobile internet. A lot of times it just doesn't connect to the wifi, even though it's turned on and the router info is remembered. I have to go in and turn wifi on and off a few times to get it to work. Then a lot of other times mobile internet just doesn't connect, and again I have to go in and turn it off and then back on and it will (mostly) work.

My other problem is that maybe once a month, it will just restart itself. It's just sat on the table and restarts for no reason whatsoever. The final thing is sometimes it gets really laggy. For example I'll be playing a game and it starts to lag quite a lot - the phone has good specs and it's only angry birds, surely it can handle that without lagging??

    That's my opinion anyway!

If anything, the lack of 'shutter' button is an advantage, since it doesn't create a downward force skewing your intended image tilt. Just brush the on-screen control with your thumb, image taken, that's it.
Well a physical button would still be more usable even if its not actually needed to control a shutter. Pressing a button with your forefinger on the top of the phone when its in landscape is far easier than pressing a touchscreen with your thumb, especially since its quite easy to miss and select one of the option buttons without the tactile feedback a physical button provides. Having had a desire and an hd, I can safely say i prefer the desire to take pictures, from a purely ergonomic point of view. And i don't know about you, but I can press a button without the camera moving about wildly in my hands :-P.
Other than that the desire hd is a great phone, and the pictures it takes are still pretty good

No, they don't. Phones and webcams don't have them. Awesome thing about CCDs, software can control the saturation. The notion that you must have some motorised iris is outdated design out of step with modern technology, pretty much like the idea of a 'shutter' button.

Is it? As I already pointed out, a physical button requires force, a force which regularly moves the camera from the intended shot. And then when you have the phone portrait oriented (a very common shot model for phones), getting at that same button is very awkward. All that sounds very much the antithesis of usable to me.

Why would it? Just have it in the top right corner, difficult to miss it then, or slip on other onscreen controls, unless you're blind, but then that'd raise other problems, like not being able to see the thing you're taking the picture of. Oh, and a physical button is also easy to miss, you could be groping and looking around for a button and miss what you were hoping to take. You see it happening all the time. I want tactile feedback in my keyboard, not in my pictures. I can see if my phone or camera acknowledges the input when it freezes the on screen image while it stores it to flash.

I'm afraid you're confusing ergonomics with nostalgic ideas of what constitutes a camera.

Not wildly, but it still moves. Even a fraction of a degree is enough to introduce blur and other difficult/impossible to compensate artefacts, and otherwise mess with your intended shot. That's quite a cost just to have fuzzy-feel-good interaction.

And ultimately, it's a phone, not a camera. The camera is a handy added extra, not the point of the device in and of itself. Cluttering the phone up with dedicated buttons for applications is stupid, a bit like that 'facebook' phone with the facebook button. *sigh*

Actually most webcams do have a shutter device, its often an LCD or similar 'non-mechnical' mechanism, but this can create issues for using them for say robots.

The ones I've taken appart were CMOS but IIRC they do exactly the same for CCD. Perhaps more so because a CCD will get smear lines (due to the construction process) when they are at extremes, we've all seen cheap webcams provide red/blue strips normally vertically, well without the shutter mechanism limiting the light, these would be much worse.

The other thing is light, most sensors have very much a sweet spot for light levels. This is very true of the smaller and cheaper sensors. As such keeping the light level there improves the quality.

Yes all these are 'production' issues if you will, but we are quite some time away from having them fixed. I've got a k-5 at the moment which has one of the better dynamic range sensors for the <£1k dslr, it can even do 512,000 ISO with useable 7x5 prints. However there is still a noticeable drop in quality going from say 800 to 200 iso.

Good review Scott. I picked up the Desire Z and love it. Works really well, the friend stream is definitely my favourite HTC widget.

I had thought htcsense.com would allow back up of sms and contacts but that doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere.

Most importantly Scott you need to change contracts. 500Mb !!

    @htid
I had a similar problem with my wifi router. There are problems between Zyxel routers and HTC phones. Search out google for info. No matter what I did the connection would start then a short while later always stop, getting stuck at authentication. The solution I found was to pick up a new wifi router. No problems at all now.

I have a Thompson router from Be. Thing is, after spending £500 on a phone, I don't expect to have to go out and have to buy a new router!
