This could be the clearest definition yet of the word 'crash'.

I see they left out the bit where the government keeps a log of your every movement in that nice little diagram.

In my area (micro electronics) an awful lot of innovation and research is motivated by automotive applications... some of it's amazing. Some of it's scary.

Re: News - Forget smartphones, here comes the smartcar

So far, these sound fairly benign, the ability to find out what's around the corner, if presented correctly, helps drivers take decisions to maneavuer safely.

What is not good is when they start talking about the "next logical step" whereby your car starts making decisions for you, like braking, de-accelerating, or worse, steering on your behalf. We're already seeing systems that do just this, whether it's parallel parking for us, or lane control to stop us wandering, they just aren't *smart* enough to actually help people in every situation.

If you want an analogy to understand my point, look at printers, we've gone from units where you can replace individual ink cartridges & decide when we want to replace them, to printers that flat out refuse to do anything without a cartridge change if the onboard chip decides it's lifespan is up. Sure in most situations this is a useful feature, but there are occasions where a human might decide it's ok to have a faded printout, because he knows it's a test page, or random junk but has no way of actually over-riding the control system.

    (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=) (='.'=)
    (")_(") (")_(") (")_(") (")_(") (")_(") (")_(") (")_(")

This is bunny and friends. He is fed up waiting for everyone to help him out, and decided to help himself instead!

Here's an interesting take to the contrary: http://www.i-programmer.info/news/10...rless-car.html

The driverless car could save millions of lives, but would have to be millions of times more reliable than a person in order for us to be likely to trust it.
