Flogging a dead horse TBH. I don't know anyone using Itanium. The only place I've come across it at all was inside IBM 3 years ago where they were using it to build JVMs for other Itanium users. Then again they were also using OS/2 for the same reason.

Getting back to the article, personally I hope Oracle get their come-uppance. I don't think anyone in HP is claiming that Itanium is going to go on forever, but neither is it being dropped soon (according to Intel). From what I've heard Oracle have been telling customers that DB on Itanium is effectively EOL'd and - by the way - can we sell you some nice shiny new Oracle servers, SPARC or x86?

Note please, not "we don't support you because you're on Itanium" but actually "we won't continue to support you because you're not on our hardware and OS" (according to some reports in DBA forums they're also trying to stop people using DB on RHEL and Suse because of "support issues").

Personally I've nothing but utter contempt for Oracle, (not only on this, but also on the disgusting way they handled the stuff they got from Sun), but if what they're doing (however underhand) is going to hasten the demise of Itanium then good on them.
