The amount of abuse MS seem to be getting on their forums has certainly provided a bit of entertainment for the afternoon. Half of them seem to be shocked that they have been banned for taking items they haven't paid for.
This news actually really worried me. I was at a (small) LAN party at the start of August, round my friend's house. We were to be playing Minecraft (not a LAN game, so over the broadband there). Unfortunately, BT are useless and insufficient speeds meant we could not all connect. So we got the Xbox's out and we were playing. I had a friend split screening on my console. The host thought that the indie game Total Miner Forge would be a laugh, so my console buddy bought it on his account. We played, etc etc.
Now, a month later, I can still play this game on my account on which it wasn't purchased. Which is why I was worried![]()
That's fine and how XBL purchases work.
When you buy content it records which gamertag made the purchase, and the serial number of the xbox it was first downloaded onto (99.9% of the time this will be that person's console). In the case of XBLA / Indie games this allows anyone on that console to play the full version even if the console is not connected to Live.
Your friend will be able to go back to his console and redownload the game, but will only be able to play it while he is connected to Live, as it detects that it is not the original console it was bought for. If he wants to play it while offline he would need to go through the licence removal tool, though MS only intend for this to be used once per year and is meant for people who are transferring all their previously bought content onto a new xbox.
The indie game you are playing was bought legitimately and is being used how MS allow - so no risk to your account or console from playing it.
