Do Apple sell a lot of phones in Korea? I would have thought that if Samsung wanted to really hurt Apple then they would have been better to get a no-iPhone5 judgement in Japan. Then again, I suppose Samsung were pretty confident that they'd benefit from "home advantage" in Korea.
I understand what they're doing, but I still despair that companies seem to so ready to sic the lawyers on each other, rather than competing on capability.
Remember that the real losers here are us, through less choice in the market and having to pay higher prices. It's a good thing that capitalism is meant to counter both of those, oh... wait.

Was iPhone5 even announced yet?
Not sure how its possible to sue something that doesn't even exist?
The whole patent system its one big fail, as above, customers are gonna be to take the hit...

What makes you think it will get worse? The main thing the America Invents Act will do is improve the harmonisation of US Patent law with that of the rest of the world (namely replacing the obscure first to invent with first to file). It will also make opposing granted US patents easier due to the introduction of an opposition period, which already works well in Europe, rather than having to go to court. I don't see how these are corporatism goodies...
It's far too early to tell what the long term implications will be. Most people I've talked to about it (admittingly mainly other patent attorneys) are cautiously welcoming of the changes if only because it makes the US patent system clearer....
Argh they're all as bad as each other!
If they're not stealing each other's work, they're pretending the other party has.
Though the argument I was going to make "I wish they'd focus on the consumer instead" is somewhat less relevant, as most of the modern phones/tabs are incorporating some really neat functionality these days.
However, if they didn't spend quite so much on patent lawyers, maybe the phones would be a little cheaper, and progress bringing new technology to the masses might be a little quicker.
Yes, I know I live in cloud cuckoo land...
It's about setting a legal precedence, just like Apple have done in Germany. A big factor in deciding court cases are previous judgements.
I think Apple are being dumb and I for one hope they collapse because of how they are causing gigantic outlays by companies to try and defend themselves against a slew of ridiculous patents.
Handset and tablet prices are not going to drop as fast as they could because of legal fees spirally out of control, all because apple want to have a monopoly to sell their over-priced tat.

+1 on this. I despair when I hear of company spokesheads talking about "acquiring patent portfolios for defensive purposes". It brings to mind the similar arguments reputedly banded about before the first world war. Even worse, I saw a quote from a member of someone's legal team that talking about using the portfolios for Mutually Assured Destruction.
That said, didn't someone famous once quote that "commerce is just war without guns" (presumably not including Vickers, Colt, FN, etc).
