These expert guesses are still just guesses.

I honestly doubt they will be selling it at that much of a loss.

Sod all profit margin yes, but not a loss, their "sure root it" policy would fly in the face of that....

It's a pretty common strategy, sell the platform at a loss and make a fortune off the content, ebooks are massive in terms of revenue. sony did it very successfully with PS3 it was selling with a mammoth £150 loss. It's putting a lot of confidence into the product but it's not as mad as it first seems.

nearly all consoles are built on the same strategy - not harmed them has it? You have to admit the fire is cheap....it will sell in it's millions, which of course, will drive the bom down!

Can't help but feel the BOM will come down less than that with the sort of numbers Amazon are looking to sell. Remember the more you build, the longer you build the cheaper something gets. Take for example the 360 or PS3. Both cost a lot to build at the start but have really ramped down with new manufacturing processes and improvements. Can't help but feel thats Amazons plan...

Except that consoles have a lifecycle of 5-10 years (the 360 is approaching it's 6th birthday), tablets however are like phones and thus lucky to last 2 years without needing significant updates to stay relevant.

It's not like books are likely to go 3D any time soon. Can't see there needing to be so many refreshes with specialist devices like this, maybe when there's a new screen tech or network type.
My only concern is should I hide my true identity? A costume maybe?

scaryjim: 10" is just a little large to hold comfortably in one hand, which makes it a lot harder to tap, swipe and generally interact with.
