Not that impressive. Had a 2500K @ 5.2Ghz on air (1.55v) during a benching session, so being capable of reaching that speed is nothing. Being able to stay at that speed, at reasonable volts, temps and with degredation, then we are talking...
Non headline from Intel for my money.
It's 100Mhz faster at stock then the previous release, it's not going to rain on anyones parade.....unless they reduce the prices of all i5 and i7 cpus.

+1 on this. Plus if Hick12's earlier calc's of UK pricing are correct then the 8150's still going to be £30-40 cheaper. (and it's stock speed is slightly faster). So sure, the 2700K is a darned good chip, but I need many cores, so the FX still looks like a winner to me - assuming that AMD don't screw up the pricing.
On the other hand, I also realise that the overclockability of the 2700K is going to make it pretty compelling for other folks. Of course, there's not been a lot of copy on how OC'able the FX's are... My current PhenomII 1090T sits quite happily/stably with at 3.8GHz which I'd categorize as a very mild OC.
Got to say that if you're in the market for an 8-thread capable processing engine then it's going to be a very interesting time coming up.

Personally I think overclocking is starting to trail off a fair bit. CPUs are hitting performance levels that mean a lot of people are seeing no real-world performance benefits from overclocking and are instead using stock (or near stock) settings with features like C1E enabled.
Starting to head that way myself even......never thought I would.

im all for overclocking (heck thats why ive got water everywhere ) but i agree, its starting to go off track a bit when cpus are being compared for OCing abilities when really it should be tested at stock first and foremost!
I only really overclock to extend the life of a product, dont need it when i first buy it so my BD or i7 wont be overclocked (or it may be for a chuckle ) until a few years lol!¬
Sorry, I meant 3rd party involvement - I think everyone takes what the manufacturers themselves claim with a pinch of salt. Thanks for the link though. Bottom line though (I guess) is that both top-end SB and BD will (happily?) go 5GHz+...

Personally speaking - 8 cores @ 4GHz 24x7 stable would be be good enough. And I'm now pretty confident that the on-desktop tools will probably get to that level. Scary isn't it?
It's really only for everyday usage that there's no longer much (any?) need for overclocking. There remain a large number of specific scenarios when it is beneficial, media encoding e.g. iTunes conversion to ipod compatible music format would be a 'common' usage scenario I suppose. But anything like that will, for many, many years to come remain something that will see benefits with faster CPUs.
True - as expressed above there's the "auto-overclock" features in the processors themselves (e.g. Intel's Turbo mode) that give a mild overclock - to misquote an IBM terminology, it's effectively Processor Upgrade on Demand (PUoD). Couple that with a desktop tool that can give a more aggressive overclock that you can switch on when required and I really don't see the need for the "conventional" BIOS-tuning form of overclocking for the majority of folks.
My previous system was BIOS overclocked to a 24x7 stable OC. The current one has been left stock because the PUoD and Overdrive combo does everything I want to. Switching into overdrive mode for AV scans works wonders.
I think OC'ing has also died down a lot since around the core2 days, mainly because more people know about it now and there isnt a great need to ask lots of questions about it.
Not being able to overclock the budget chips on intel now has killed a lot of interest I reckon, also because phenom II is significantly slower and typically tops out at just below 4GHz along with that its common knowledge there isnt the demand.
If bulldozer gets reasonably close to sandybridge performanance clock for clock and can OC typically to 5GHz then I think OCing posts will go up significantly. If there is core unlocking too then bonus and I think AMD will clean up with the enthusiasts who then typically build machines for others or give recommendations.
