Is this forced on the user? I was under the impression with Windows 8 you could just use the standard desktop view and with this use the start menu search bar?

I REALLY hope that you can change the view to Windows 7 style. Dont like the look of that at all. I am so used to Windows Explorer and the functionality of the current start menu I wont want to be changing it to that new look.

I do think you will be able to change it to Win 7 style, you can still change the menu style on Vista and 7 to XP. I think if they forced that on users they would end up getting no end of complaints. Yeah it works on phones and tablets, but on a desktop most users know exactly what they are wanting.

It seems as if W8 won't feature a fallback Start Menu of W7. I'm entirely unsure about the qualities of the new search.

Re: News - Windows 8 Start screen search functionality detailed

The traditional Windows upgrade path remains intact. Buy one, miss one. I just want an OS that sits in the background, keeps out of my way, and doesn't cause me stress. Win7 seems to do that remarkably well.

The scary thing about all this is that according to discussion on the Windows Weekly podcast, Win8 is very heavily designed around the feedback MS gets from people out in the wild who have allowed data to be sent back to MS. So it's an OS being aimed firmly at the median user.

That should be enough to frighten anyone.

I'm going to give it a chance - the dev preview is quite shocking at first but it's a very early build and doesn't have some of the features MS have demoed. I like a lot of things in Win8 but I am finding this (massive) change quite a mindbender. Of course changing *anything* in Windows will cause massive outcry..

Logic failure. Besides, I haven't seen anything in 8 that removes functionality for the marginal user group (e.g. "power" users). Perhaps you can provide a clear example where it doesn't cover a user story?

Re: News - Windows 8 Start screen search functionality detailed

The deciding factor in the success of this launch will be what state the operating system defaults to. If a new installation automatically defaults to this touch screen optimised version people will not be happy. If you get the option to try the new layout I suspect they'll get far more people switching to W8 than the earlier scenario.

I just hope they've improved the search functionality. It's utterly useless in Windows 7.

Re: News - Windows 8 Start screen search functionality detailed

Bit concerned about this. Really don't like this - I normal quite like the start bar improvements MS roles out (The search for apps in Win7 is great when you have lots of apps installed) but this just seems pointless for a desktop user. Really hoping Microsoft isn't throwing out the baby with the bath water this time (baby == corporate desktop users). Remember where the users (money) are Microsoft! Tablets aren't as big a market as to make annoying current users a good idea!

So windows 8 doesn't have a traditional task bar and start menu? I thought the Metro UI was just a option?

The Metro "shell" isn't optional, there is still a "traditional" task bar.

when you first search, the whole screen is taken up but you can resize the window, allowing you to see the desktop, which, interestingly, is dynamically resized rather than just sitting behind the search window

Metro isn't optional. When you boot you are presented with it, but once you hit the desktop tile you can pretty much chose to ignore metro.

    The taskbar look familiar.

the start button (left click) takes you straight back to metro. Right click= options for explorer/properties. Taking the mouse to bottom left opens things like settings but there is no more menu list as per W7 et al

Theres a tool out there that diabled the metro side of things, I've got it on my laptop which I am using to play with Win8 and that boots to the more traditional desktop..
