I'd love to know where they did their market research and how! I don't know anyone with a smartphone, they are too expensive for most people! I would say less than 30% of the populations has one. We are getting a new mobile phone soon and it will be a cheap non-smart Tesco jobbie which is the sort most people buy.

Also, several people I know have got a mobile phone but have just slung it in the back of a draw as they never need or want to use it anymore...

I just love how these polls and surveys of a few hundred people try to wave such error ridden statistics about!

Re: News - Only half of us are smart and a quarter are Androids

These figures did roll in two days prior to the release of Apple's iPhone 4S, however, so expect a marked change in the next set of data.
Not entirely convinced by that - certainly there's disappointment that they (Apple) "promised" a "5" but only delivered a "4S" - 50% to 19% is a pretty hefty left for the wee green robot.
We do wonder what effect this is having on the UK's 3G data network, with 3 close to running out of bandwidth and performance in congested areas already suffering for all networks.
But they (Three) keep trying to INCREASE the amount of data we're using - okay, I can understand that it's pretty much their USP - who else does "unlimited" data, doesn't mind you using Skype, and doesn't object to tethering?
Though Kantar has shown that Android customers are fairly loyal, with 62 per cent sticking with the OS when they change phone, the OS's promiscuity and standardised interface makes it much easier for consumers to be less loyal to the handset makers themselves.
And ICS is going to make this worse - since tweaks like MotoBlur, Sense, etc are going to be less "invasive" and phone more reliant on standard Android.
Both Nokia and Sony Ericsson have suffered market-share losses, according to the report, but both are now on the warpath with Nokia's strong step forward with its new Windows Mobile smartphones and Sony's recent buyout announcement of Sony Ericsson to bring devices back in-step with the core business. With iPhone 4S figures yet to filter through and the effects of Nokia and Sony's new strategies to be felt, we look eagerly forward to the next round of research.
Don't think the SE->Sony move will do a heck of a lot, might even make sales fall - because at least "Ericsson" has a reputation for phone devices. Say "Sony" and most folks'll think "PS3".

Nokia, on the other hand, I would genuinely be scared of if I was an Android phone maker or Apple. They're betting the company on getting WP7 "right".

Career status: still enjoying my new career in DevOps, but it's keeping me busy...

Well.. I'm on a Samsung Windows Mobile 6.1 phone from 2008! I maybe tempted by Android 4.0, but thats a way off yet.. Windows Phone looks interesting and seems to be evolving nicely, so I haven't decided which I'm going for next, to be honest.

The article doesn't provide adequate data to give the statistics any meaning. They are empty numbers without the context in which they were gathered.

I understand that this isn't a scientific journal but the information presented is still inadequate none-the-less.

Wow - I only know a dozen without smartphones and that goes for work colleagues and family members. I'd say these stats tie up nicely with what I see. From reference I'd 50%+ Android, 25% Apple, 20% Blackberry and maybe 5% Symbian! Interestingly the blackberrys are all business people or teenagers. Android and Apple are people my age (30). The symbians are generally people who don't upgrade with old PAYG. Regarding Windows phone I've got to be honest - I haven't even see one outside a shop...

Finally I Don't think I'll be seeing my parents with a smartphone any time soon though!

It is easy to be fooled though, there are plenty of smartphones rolling about with the feel of a feature phone but actually have a smartphone OS.

Once my contract is up for renewal I'll be definitely leaving Andriod and possibly leaving smartphones. As mobile phone experiences go my smartphone one has been the worst. It's been a stressful experience to say the least and everyday I wish I could type or say IDKFA and be provided with guns to shoot this phone. I've often thought about going back to my Nokia non smartphone, I'll try to stick it out for another 12 months and see if it can get better, so glad I've not put any money to apps.

I reckon that'll work in their favour though. Think SE and I get *meh*. Think Sony and I think *ooh shiny*.

I checked and also found very little info that make the statistics useful... I suspect the info required to make the statistics meaningful is only available to their customers.

We aren't running out of things to demand freedom in, not that it's a good thing mind you.

I'm being nosy - but what was this nadir of telecommunications - LG Optimus, HTC something, SE X10?

I can empathise to an extent - when I switched from Nokia N95 to SE X10, I was distinctly UNIMPRESSED - to the point that I was seriously thinking of taking the darn stupid P.O.S. back to the Three store and telling them to give me my money back. Luckily I managed to get some help from the SE forums and after about a 3-4 weeks I was at the "well it's as good as the N95" was, and I'm now at the "this is actually pretty good".

I guess it's down to what your expectations are - if "merely" text and phone calls then I'll agree 200% that a good "dumbphone" is better than ALL of the smartphones. Not only does the OS not get in your way, but it starts faster, battery's last an enormous amount longer, and so on. I suspect that a lot of the folks around me getting smartphones only do so either because their pals have them, or that's what the guy/gal in CPW, P4U, etc wanted to sell them (because of increased commission?).

HTC Wildfire. I agree its the slowest processor, but in my opinion doesnt do anything properly and should be reported to trading standards. It was a good upgrade from my Nokia on paper.

    • Basic things such as the Andriod text messaging application doesnt work properly. You get a message and select it to read. But it will open up a random message from a random person from a random date.
    • The Andriod phone app will dial then randomly freeze until you hang up, so if you have to go through a menu i.e. calling BT, you cant! And the person at the other end often has to hang up first because the Hang Up button doesn't respond.
    • When you use the camera, on screen the picture is in focus, the output is blurry. If its not sunny you get bugger all in the picture. I can get some cracking photo's with my 3mp Nokia, I thought a 5mp HTC would be amazing.
    • The HTC weather app never gives you the weather, just a black screen saying 'Updating'.
    • Andriod forces you to link to a google account, and if you want to change it you have to do a factory reset.
    • Zooming in and zooming out of a website for example, works sometimes but not others. I now dont use it to surf the web, I wanted to use it for price comparrison whilst in the high street but I'd get a quicker response driving home to use my desktop and back again.
    • The dictonary doesnt have many words, I've added hundreds of them, and it always wants to add numbers to the dictionary.
    • You cant quickly turn on and off predictive text whilst typing a text message.
    • The keyboard has to be in US. Trying to get to the £ symbol is like trying to get to your nearest neighbour via a round the world sailing trip, it's quicker to type GBP but that confuses everyone so you're best off avoiding talking about monetry figures altogether.
    • The Android menu system is awful, you cant organise it at all.
    • You cant uninstall the HTC apps, and they are really bad and pointless.

My list goes well beyond the above....

So I'm left with a RubbishPhone that isn't smart.
