Maybe I'm missing something here, but surely Activision know how many packs with the Elite membership are out there, and it'd be easy to take a "worst case" that all those packs would be sold for Day 1, and the eager owners would all try and register on Day 1.
I figured that this might happen, so I'm going to leave it a week before I try putting in my Elite/Founder reg - I don't have a need to rush, seeing as I've still to finish the SP Campaign.
"We are proud to say that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has launched and millions of people are already playing online,"
They knew how many copies they were roughly going to sell, they pushed the Elite service really hard on the run-up to MW3, yet they still managed to have it collapse while still in the "hundreds of thousands""We have already registered hundreds of thousands of players and we are working around the clock to increase our capacity as quickly as possible"
hmm

It costs money to upgrade their servers.......

Shall we also mention the many many crashes experienced when playing online - last night over 4 hours of play I got an "Out of memory Error 14" message 5 times, and quite a few timeouts..and this is on a PS3! (one of the benefits of a console is meant to be the secure hardware platform and software framework so that you don't get those kind of errors..i'd expect it on a PC but a console?)

Just to play a little devils advocate... While I definitely agree that Activision and IW should have been more prepared for this given the cash they make hand over fist from the franchise. Predicting demand for a cross platform service the likes of which has never previously existed on console for a series who's sales and console attatch rates increase with every new installment can't be easy.
I know everybody seems to be enjoying being part of the hate parade for MW3 right now but let's not forget that what EA had the nerve to call an open beta for BF3 barely worked to begin with and that a lot of people (myself included) had just as much trouble getting into a decent match even once the full game was released. It isn't easy to get this stuff right first time. Look at the Gears of War series, Epic had all the financial backing and beta testing in the world, just as tried and tested a game engine and Microsoft looking over their shoulders every five minutes helping out and it still took them three attempts to get the online side of Gears working properly at launch. This stuff isn't as easy as throwing money at more servers like people think it is.
To clarify my post wasnt really hating MW3... a simple comment on the basis that i wanted someone to give a comparison between bf3 and mw3 in terms of launch bugs and current bugs as i know BF3 was getting alot of hate for bugs but if mw3 has alot to then its a bit unfair critisim

I can't comment on BF3 on the console (still mystifying why anyone would buy it for a console..but that's advertising for you!) - so it's a bit of an unfair comparison..but
I have had more issues with my 4 hours on MW3 than I have had on my initial 4 hours with BF3..and even on my entire "time played" with BF3.
Note that I am excluding single player from the comparison - I have not played much of BF3's and have had no problems with the COD SP experience.

True, but in that case - as has been expressed on other threads by so many - they're going to be in for a disappointment given the number of "effort-free" console ports that exist on the PC.
Personally speaking, I'd feel a bit short-changed if MW3 looks/feels exactly like the one on the XBox - given the hardware disparity between consoles and PC these days. E.g. it's been assumed for at least a year now that the entry level for gaming was a dual core PC with 2GB RAM and a DX9/SM3 capable video card - and I'm guessing that this is a good deal better than even the mighty PS3, never mind the dumb-as-a-post XBox that I've got.
You mentioning impulse buys has got me thinking whether there's a cheap copy of Black Ops out there for the PC - be interesting to see how Treyarch engines perform on relatively up to date hardware.
I don't think a cheap copy of any CoD game exists any more. Hell, even in the big steam summer sale where almost everything ended up between 50 and 75% off, they dropped BO and the map packs by 15% IIRC.
As for how that engine runs......they patched it many times to try and get it working smoothly on dual cores and shift some load to the GPU....I think it even runs on dual cores fine(ish) now.....but like many ports, it required 3 cores to run smooth for quite a while and hardly used to the GPU on release......while most people were struggling with it (and I was in a video card transition) I was running it at 60FPS solid on an i7 + GTS250 @ 2560x1600.
