I've been suffering from these bugs on my iPhone 4S, and this patch has seemed to fix things quite well. I've only been using it since 7 this morning, so maybe I'm speaking too soon, but there seems to be a marked improvement.
This is my scepticism of Apple shining through, but I suspect they've maybe done what they did with Antennagate and just make the battery % indicator just show more battery :p
I wouldn't put it past them!
Will the update erase data or not?

It seems that people arent seeing any battery increase and in some cases it gets worse
Yes, because previously they used a non-linear scale to rapidly give more signal bars for a tiny amount more actual signal (this had the convenient side-effect of making it appear iPhones had better signal than other phones). They then changed the calibration so e.g. the old 4 bars became 2 bars, so when held wrong the phone only dropped 1 or 2 bars, not 4 - thus 'minimising' the problem.
Well it would seem there is still some kind of bug. I had my phone on charge last night after I'd updated to 5.0.1. When I went to bed it was fully charged 100% battery indicator. I left it in the charging dock. When I got up this morning the percentage indicator said 95% and "Time since last full charge" was showing 0 minutes for both Usage and Standby, how is this even possible it's still connected to AC power and is indicated as such!!!!
Li-ion batteries on laptops aren't kept at 100% to lengthen battery lifespan; they are charged to 100% and allowed to drain to e.g. 95% before getting recharged. Could be a similar thing.
