I can't see Microsoft abandoning Windows XP as it still generates a bit of revenue for them. Vista on the other probably doesn't and hasn't for a while.
AdiĆ³s Vista, we barely knew ye and, frankly, we didn't really want to.
they should just give people a win 7 upgrade really
I will admit, I agree Windows XP is still a vital part in both home and commercial habitats, 90% of the work I get given is work on XP machines, the look on customers faces when you tell them they will soon need to update their machines. Now when I tell the Vista customers there going to have a fit.
On the plus side, invokes more work to update their machines to 7
Well you can't expect them to support it forever. It was released in 2001 so ending support in 2014 seems pretty generous. Also, what developer wants to continue working on ancient technology when there are new and shiny toys begging for their attention.
Recent got given an old Vista laptop and used the OS for the first time since about a month after windows 7 came out. Its not as bad as I remember - Its just very RAM hungry and slow to startup. Give it enough RAM and remove any bloatware (as I've done) and it seems ok. Still rather have Win7 though (which it'll have once I've removed my sisters data)!
Vista was "Windows Millenium Edition" for the new millenium!
They wont be abandoning it completely. Windows XP Professional for Embedded Systems is supported until 2016. It is exactly the same as the standard edition of Windows XP Pro and dont believe they would know which version you are using for the simple reason the keys for XP Pro work on XP Pro for Embedded systems and vice versa.
So I can still see updates coming through for the original version of XP Pro for some time yet.
Vista sucks, no matter if they update it or not...
