    Re: News - Xbox 720 and PS4 announcement at E3 2012?

Interesting. However, I'd have thought MS and Sony could get away with leaving it for another year. A growing number of high-end PCs may trump consoles now, but the majority of machines do not, and they cannot offer anything close to the consistency of experience that a console does.

Maybe throw some money at improving game engine performance on these platforms to help keep new games fresh or provide middleware that opens up new possibilities for features in-game.

    Re: News - Xbox 720 and PS4 announcement at E3 2012?

Two priorities for me if I'm to get another games console:
    1) Reliability on release - My PS3 has YLOD and I'm aware the release xbox were also RROD easily.
    2) Price - I spent £500 on my gaming PC 3 years ago. Since then I've upgraded the GPU but nothing else and really feel it was money well spent. I've spent £300 on Xbox hardware (including kinect - all new) and about £200 on the PS3 (second hand) and don't feel I got anything like the same value.

I'm just not bothered about motion control (kinect doesn't work in my average front room) and the move controller has just gathered dust. I'm also not bothered by media capabilities as I've got a £90 blu-ray player that does it all (and I'm not paying monthly for iplayer et all microsoft!). All in all I'm not really convinced I'll get another console except maybe a WII U as a casual games device as thats basically what my xbox has become...

    Re: News - Xbox 720 and PS4 announcement at E3 2012?

Game developers are really starting to struggle with the current consoles, there's been money for optimising game engines for years and if one side decided to release a new console, the other wouldn't want to arrive late to the party. There's only so much throwing money at existing hardware can do, after which it's probably cheaper to design a new platform with lessons of the previous platforms in mind.

I agree they probably could have waited another year but with devs breathing down their necks and the threat of competition, they both want to get in as early as economically possible.

I hope they don't dedicate too much to 3D/motion control!

And I know it's been referred to as the 720 in lieu of a real name, but if they actually call it that...

    Re: News - Xbox 720 and PS4 announcement at E3 2012?

Whilst I'm still suprised Nintendo didnt call the 'Wii U' the 'Wii HD' (which IMO would have made waaaay more sense)- Im really looking forwward to the release of all of these consoles.

Why? Partly because I'll buy all of them, but alos - and most importantly - because when the new consoles come out PC GAMES WILL GET BETTER.

How so? Because 99% of most games these days are console ports... so the pc effectively gets a dx8/9 based game with *maybe* a high res texture pack.

So if consoles come out that are capable of full 1080p quality textures etc, the equivalent pc ported games will get better.

Consoles hold pc games back. So in a nutshell - Consoles get better so pc's can move further along!

    Re: News - Xbox 720 and PS4 announcement at E3 2012?

Maybe I'm being cynical but surely if they announced in June then there'd be an expectation of availability around Christmas time? And if that was the case, then surely Microsoft/Sony would really have to start thinking about starting production real soon now? Or have I misunderstood and it's a "launch" in June with a planned availability sometime in (early?) 2013?

I'm going to agree with cheesemp and watercooled - don't mind what they do, just as long as they don't insist on Kinect/3D respectively. Actually I'd like to see the equivalent of DX11 on XBox (whatever DX is on Windows8 would be even better), and of course compatibility with existing peripherals.

I game on the XBox a good deal more than I do on PC (although BF3 has had me flocking back to the PC), but Kinect turned out to be a poor buy since there's only one room in my house where I can use it, and since it's not where the XBox sits normally, using it means some setup work first.

It makes no sense to announce the next 360 just yet when Halo 4 is supposed to a 360 exclusive game.

Once Halo 4 has been released and been out awhile, then expect an announcement on the next generation console.

    1. it will get worse. good luck cooling a Sandy bridge type of cpu, passively and a 6870 sort of GPU.
End of the day, you cannot redefine laws of physics/science. The more power you push on components, the higher cooling required.

    2. Price you are looking at £300 mimimum IMO for these next gen consoles whilst your current pc will IMO still match these next gen consoles. Or instead of dumping £300 on these consoles, you can dump £300 on a new GPU that will be nigth and day better then what these consoles will offer.

You can't just assume that; if anything the MFRs should have learned to not let the ICs run so hot, ensure better mounting, etc so I'd expect reliability to be better if anything, neither company wants to go through replacing most of the consoles they sold again. Consoles do not use PC components (with the exception being the original Xbox which was effectively rushed out but still didn't use standard parts), rather they favour RISC CPUs more suited to the specialised nature of the hardware and more cost-effective GPUs. The next consoles should be in a similar power envelope as the previous gen, as tech advances you get much greater power/performance.

£300 no chance!! PS3 was £425 on release, if the next gen are any better they are gonna start at at least £500. Well that's what i'm convincing myself so I can justify changing to PC gaming-its cheaper in the long run until i decide that 3 monitors and Xfire is the way to go and go mental on the spending

    Re: News - Xbox 720 and PS4 announcement at E3 2012?

Well consoles have historically been sold at a loss so not necessarily, 500 sounds like a lot more than 300-400 and it doesn't have to be more expensive to be far better than the existing consoles. The PS3 was a bit on the expensive side on release but mostly due to questionable decisions on hardware, they could have easily knocked £100 off if they'd budgeted a bit better, but being late to the party they must have felt they had to offer some headline features over the already established 360.

I'm going to totally disagree with you I'm afraid. First off, unless you're the kind of guy who goes for the "minimum specs are good enough for me" then you can figure on changing graphics card every 12-18 months for a start, then you've got new mobo+cpu+memory combo every 3-4 years. Now granted, the current champs - '360 and PS3 - are probably past their sell-buy dates, but the console cost is only about the same as a good mobo+cpu+memory bundle. I bought a GT460 Christmas '10 and I'm very sure that I'll need to upgrade next Christmas if I want to have a reasonable level of graphics performance.

Secondly, Sony might be able to get away with selling a PS4 for £500, but I would politely suggest that if the Xbox720 was priced at this level then there's going to be real problems selling it - especially at the kind of volumes that developers will expect if they are to develop for it. That kind of price point will be fine for the folks that happily drop that kind of money for a tablet, but surely it excludes "mum and dad" buying one for junior? My feeling is that if the '720 doesn't come with bundled Kinect then it'll be priced somewhere between £300 and £400.

Buy the games not the console.

    Specification is irrelevant in console.

Well i tend to favour PC's because:

    1. better graphics
    2. Mod support on some games
    3. cheaper
    4. Mouse and keyboard for FPS.

Now if the next gen consoles allowed native support for Mouse and keyboard for all FPS games, then i think that alone would get many die hard pc fans attentions.

Now that would actually make me dump the PC for FPS games (as long as its not the mouse imitating the thumb stick as current work around's do)

On another note, will be interesting to see what the "PS4" will be called. I can imagine everywhere but Japan will have the name PlayStation 4 as the number 4 over there is seen as very unlucky in Japanese culture. The number 4 is sometime pronounced as Shi in Japan which unfortunately, shares the same pronunciation in Japanese for the word "Death" xD

I can see why maybe it might not appear as a PS4 in Japan.

As usual though with the likes of new XBox or Playstation I will wait a year or so for them to drop in price and/or wait for the early model issue's to be ironed out.

Be interested in the PS4 but hopefully not like the pic in the article as my PS3 lays down in a cupboard so would be a waste of that.

Also more bloody USB ports, I really *HATE* not having rear usb ports on the slim, means have to have stuff plugged in at the front and looks ugly.

In terms of the new xbox, which I think will just get called "X-Box" if they are going to use a version of Windows 8 for its OS, production would not start until I would guess the RTM build is done of Windows 8 which could be tail end of 2012
