Re: News - Megaupload shut down by federal prosecutors

reading the details, the number of users is genuinely mind blowing. I don think i have ever used it myself (except a free download user from XDA) although i have darted between using a couple of the others (rapidshare and fileserve) since university. Fileserve was especially useful as it gave you an FTP server, haven't used it for a while now though so im not sure if it still does.
I wonder if they have any plans to go after the users at al because that would be a monumental effort!

I just hope people who were using it for legitimate uses get their money back!

Re: News - Megaupload shut down by federal prosecutors

Did you guys even read/understand the article?!

'Persons indicted have "instructed individual users how to locate links to infringing content on the Mega Sites ... [and] ... have also shared with each other comments from Mega Site users demonstrating that they have used or are attempting to use the Mega Sites to get infringing copies of copyrighted content."'

Well if they run the site and have knowingly and publicly posted links to copyright material encouraging how to get it then that's just dumb. I totally agree that if they just ran the site and remained ignorant of the content then they shouldn't be prosecuted but if it there is clear evidence that they have been encouraging piracy then they slipped up. Badly. Don't get me wrong, I'm all against SOPA and these ridiculous, invasive and harsh proposals.

If the accusations are true, they're screwed. If not, the counter lawsuit will be EPIC.

I will certainly be watching (or rather, reading) the case with interest.

As a legitimate user I did just use the free service, just a shame is it worked so well.

Looks like somebody has put some pressure on Filesonic now as well ...

"All sharing functionality on FileSonic is now disabled. Our service can only be used to upload and retrieve files that you have uploaded personally.”

    what's next for them??

Re: News - Megaupload shut down by federal prosecutors

seems near enough all the file locker sites are scared poo-less and have changed their policy so that people can no longer share files.

Feel sorry for all those who were using them legitimately, is there likely to be any way that they can get a refund for their accounts?

The number of scam file locker websites asking for donations to get started is just incredible!

This is a sorry day for the internet.

Seems some sites are not going down either, just blocking US IPs.

    Interesting point.

    I'd recommend the following.

    1) Anyone with a paid-for Premium account that wishes to apply for a refund can.

    2) As the authorities have seized loads of evidence, presumably they can identify Premium subscribers, and activity on their account. Do so, for applicants.

    3) If the activities on that Premium account are entirely legitimate, refund them, pro-rata, for the unused portion of their subscription, paid for from the seized assets.

    4) If the activities on the account indicate illegal activities, prosecute them where a crime has been committed. Where it hasn't but illegal material was still downloaded, pass the details to the copyright holders to take civil action if they wish.

I wonder how many applications for refund they'd get? What proportion of Premium users would stick their heads above the parapet, and what proportion would slink away quietly, considering they dodged a legal bullet? Personally, I have no idea, but I'd love to know. My guess would be that the number would be pretty small, and the percentage far smaller.
