Bit of a crowded market i would have thought but if they get the price right then there is no harm in a bit more competition.
Isn't this old news?
Yup, AMD is a past master at 'launching' a product and the actually releasing it to distis and retailers.
As you can imagine as a seller of graphics cards, AMD buys in a heck of a lot of memory from the likes of Hynix and Samsung, to name but two. These economies of scale enable the firm to negotiate attractive pricing for system RAM. This is the raison d'etre that was put forward when I had a chat with reps at CES.

Doesn't seem like particularly wise investment, but could result in some interesting bundle deals though!
its a solid investment, as you said bundles but regardless of bundles it makes it much easier for OEMs as they can manage with one company and again AMD can just buy a crap load more and/or sell of any spares as desktop. Basically its a sound investment, makes it cheaper all round to opperate and they could make some money in the process

How long until they start making out thet Crossfire runs better with AMD system RAM?![]()
i don't think they will, i see them only going for the guaranteed compatibility angle.

Do AMD have their own OEM motherboards too? Certainly never seen one, unlike intel who occasionally have retail boards. If so then yes you really could deal with one company for the core of the build.
I thought AMD only make the GPU chip and 3rd parties like ASUS, SAPPHIRE etc. use the GPU in their own PCB's and add RAM and other bits?
You have to wonder if there is much margin to make on these chips, with ram prices falling so low and performance mostly stagnating in the desktop market I cant see them making much profit.
Example 8Gigs (2x4GB) of 1600mhz ddr3 from a respected branded manufacturer (kingston) is £33.09 its actually 9p cheaper than there 1333mhz stuff. Other brands like corsair fall in just a few quid more.
They will have to sell at around that ball park if they're going to sell at all and personally I cant see them making much money per stick.
