If it matches the 6870 in performance, I'm tempted to crossfire 2
"expected to hit retail at or below £130"
Too tempting.
Not too shabby (if the price is right), now for the 7870/7850.
Nice. Waiting for 7850 though.. Hope will be around £200 mark. Also be nice to see some GTXes finally creeping out.. Can't wait till April.
Those GCN processors and the 7xxx series architecture is going to have to be a lot more potent that the older VLIW4s of the 6xxx series for a 7770 to even come close to a 6870. The 6870 has 1120 compared to the suggested 640 of the 7770. There is not even much of a difference in core clocks. Even my old 4850s have 800 VILW5 processors and at 625MHz (stock) they ought not to be too left to far in the distance.
I think the good old 6870s which seem to be at about £130 at the moment will remain best bang for buck for a while.
Still truth will out on Wednesday then
7770 @ 80 TDP would make a very good crossfire solution if the performance is on par with the 6870.
Confused, how is it onpar with the 6870?
7770 / 6870 / %difference
Core Clock(mhz): 1000 / 900 / +11%
Memory clock(mhz): 4500 / 4200 / +7%
Shaders: 640 / 1120 / -42.8%
Compute units: 10 / 14 / -28.5%
Texture Units: 40 / 56 / -28.5%
ROP: 16 / 32 / -50%
Memory Bus: 128bit / 256bit / -50%
So basically its MUCH weaker in everything except for a 11% core clock and 7% mem clock increase... I think its established that GCN is slower because its so new so i cant see how this will best it? Am i missing something
edit: looks like its going to be just close to a 6770 really? bump from 850 --> 1000 and a drop in mem from 4800---> 4500 then the rest is similar bar 800 shaders vs 640... confused!
Other rumours put the HD7770 as having 1280 shaders and a 128 bit memory bus.
The HD7870 is meant to have 1408 shaders but with a 256 bit memory bus.
If these cards really come in with 640 / 512 shaders they're going to be a bit of a disappointment, tbh. Based on the previous moves from VLIW5 - VLIW4 - GCN, a 640 shader GCN card is equivalent to roughly an 800 shader VLIW5 card at the same clocks - and the outgoing 6770 *is* an 800 shader VLIW5 card. The clock speeds have been bumped up which will help it perform a little better, but if these rumours are true we're unlikely to see 6870-beating performance from the 7770 - unless AMD have mixed some special sauce in to the GPU, of course...
The specs of the HD7770 look hardly any better than the HD5770. So much for progress.
