It seems a 1/1.2" sensor is used:

That makes it larger than the one found in most prosumer compact cameras.
Here are sample pictures:

Nice phone design - reminiscent of the old iPhone3 in some respects to my eyes. Just wish it wasn't lumbered with Symbian.
Ouch. What the heck is going wrong with Nokia? The market is releasing new versions of Android and iOS at record speed and they can't even release a phone like this with Windows mobile when they have experience of it...
Some full sized pictures from the camera:

I would expect this to hit A Windows phone eventually, presumably they didn't want to bin a project.
Well I imagine if they can put this in a nice form factor and have good browsing support on a decent screen this could be potentially swing me to a Nokia phone as I value the camera aspect more than any other phone feature, those full res images are very impressive.
I wouldn't be surprised if the software for decoding this was in such a shambles porting it to WinPho basically means porting it to new developers.....
Nokia was never known for its good pratices when it came to software.

This the stunning marketing that's got Microsoft where it is today. Laser like focus and investment in a joined up mission produce a holistic ecosystem, meshing multiple markets, technologies and innovations into a single product and then launching something random misguided and stunningly out of sync with market needs. RIP Microsoft. Dazzled to death by marketeers and MBAs because lost faith in engineering vision (even the stuff you bought at the 11th hour).
The main reason why they probably released it for Symbian, was the project started 5 years ago, before WP7 even existed.
Also to all the Symbian haters, have you actually used Belle? It works pretty slick on my phone which runs at half the speed of the 808, so performance should be incredibly quick.
I hope they release pureview for the other platforms sooner rather than later (rumours potentially before 2013), if not I hope they continue developing symbian Carla and Donna.
I've heard belle is pretty nice too, probably just came too late to make enough inroads. I just got an "old" n97 on ebay and it runs better than a lot of android phones
I've been using Belle on a C7-00 that I had returned from a director and I have to say that it's been absolutely fine. Decent battery life, decent performance, nice interface, very responsive accelerometer. I really think that Nokia have made an error ditching Symbian when Belle shows that it can be a really nice platform with just a little bit of effort. I think it makes sense for this particular device.
Totally agree with that first part - as far as I'm concerned Nokia (et al) were content to let Symbian just trickle along. Then compounded that with some really poor devices - e.g. I read an article recently that, excluding the N900 which is a whole different ball game, the pinnacle of the N-series was the N95 8GB. I've still got my old N95 and it's got a superb camera.
No, irrespective of how good Symbian is now, or will be in the future, the world's moved on and I'd politely suggest that Nokia's smartphone focus in the middle and top range really should now be on it's Windows Phone gear. Note, I've no problem with them doing Symbian for the budget handsets.
Oh the "runs better than a lot of android phones" comment? Yep, it never fails to amaze me how some manufacturers seem happy to ship poorly-performing phones. Although, I'd suggest that, in most cases, this is due to the "value add" that those self-same manufacturers add - e.g. Sense and MotoBlur seem to come in for particular stick on that point.
Well, the pictures do look more than great but Idk..
