And my Galaxy S has been binned by support 18 months after i got it... one reason i might be going apple next time around
whats annoying is O2 have ditched the phone allready - they got 1 release of gingerbread (manually updated to the latest) but thats not the point - ics works on the galaxy S as well
time to root i think![]()

@Scribe
How did you install another rom without rooting? I thought you had to root to install another rom (haven't tried yet).
Also, where did you get your carrier free rom from?
Thanks
actually i just used odin to install 2.3.6 - O2 wont support anything newer than first release gingerbread , was really easy - then i went *gulp* over all the possible brick the phone that could happen with it
You can debrand, which involves making a 'gold card' out of your sd card to spoof the handset ID so you can put a plain ROM on...
For the S II there's a great resource here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1075278
I would assume there's a similar resource for the original Galaxy S somewhere on xda-developers too.
About time. I might be on the lookout for a custom ROM which doesn't include TouchWiz though. No problems with it in Gingerbread but I'd rather have the base ICS experience.
Why would you buy an Android phone and not fiddle around with it???
Pretty sure there is some ICS build out there for the Galaxy S already that is stable enough to be used daily. There's even roms out there that overclock the cpu and smooths a lot of it out to make a great phone 'Greater'.
Not that hard to do if you just read simple guides over on XDA.
Apple on the otherhand.... go there if you want it all to be boring and easy.
My experience of them hasn't been that hot. Updated a perfectly fine 3GS to iOS 5 and the phone was crippled to a crawl and struggled with most simple things.
Based on my experiences with the Asus Transformer, and the user reports on the Sony site for the beta ROM for the Arc S, then I'm going to agree that SII owners are in for a treat with their ICS upgrade. TBH, on the Transformer I wouldn't go back to Honeycomb even if you offered me £100 cash to do so.
Anyone know (rumours okay) if ICS will be the last upgrade for the S2? Reason being that I quite fancy an S3 when my contract expires in four months, but if it's going to be a £600+ slab* then I was thinking that the S2 would be a suitable "fall back", (* if I can "live with" a slab phone then it's the Galaxy Note for me). If the S2 is likely to get an official Jelly Bean release then it's definitely worth thinking about, Key Lime I'm quite happy to get via XDA (assuming I've still got the phone by then).
I'm not updating to anything. My Galaxy SII is rock solid and does not hand. Why waste my time if everything works (unless it's a hobby of yours to update OS).
However, each time i talk about something working, it breaks apart the next day...
If the Samsung upgrade is like the Asus one, then it's no big deal to do - more like a big patch. Heck, mine completed in about ten minutes, including the download.
I understand, (and to an extent agree), with what you're saying about "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"*. On the other hand, are you saying that you wouldn't like a little more speed and some of the less-clever design features fixed?
(* my phone's on an old Gingerbread release, and while I could go to XDA to get an ICS upgrade, the vendor-supplied ROM is stable and works relatively well - so like you I figure why go to the hassle at this point).
Samsung now confirmed ICS to be rolled out 10th March
Lets see if it happens
