Next big think is AI that will learn and environments that will change. I personally don't care about graphics any more. Most recent games look nice as is, just iron out bugs, optimise (GTA IV anyone?), improve physics (i.e. GT5 looks good enough but to see car rolling in a imaginary "twister" instead of real roll and crash is just not good enough) and add some new dimension (where are all promised growing and learning environments?).

Hmm, and I suspect that Mr Carmack's new "wonder" device will be - like a lot of VR headsets - not really usable if you wear glasses.
And as to his comment about next gen being "what we already have, but better" I for one would be quite happy to settle for that - as long as the "better" is notably better. More processing power so we could have "smarter" AI would be high up my list of priorities.

How many gens away are we from photo-realistc graphics? : )
Personally I think peripherals are a gimmick and they should always be focusing on making games look more real.

He makes game engines, and idtech4 and 5 blow everything else out of the water in terms of how well they perform.
Given that, Rage and Doom 3 were awful trainwrecks of misplaced vision and too much emphasis on the tech and not on the experience. Quake Live is great though. Needs id tech 5 version.
Re: News - Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox 720 won’t be a great leap forward
I think he's right the next gen will give us what the current gen were supposed to ie 1080p 60fps all quality options turned on. This is easily achievable on our PC's but you have to remember that the current gen consoles are about 5-6 hardware generations behind current hardware and the next gen will be roughtly equivalent to last gen hardware hd6970/gtx480 levels.
A decent VR headset even with a 720p res will be infinitly better than 1080p on a flat screen.
Especialy if you can get some kind of limb/digit tracking into it as well.
Re: News - Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox 720 won’t be a great leap forward
I would like developers to concentrate on procedurally generated content, like Spore was supposed to do before EA mutilated it. In other words, figure out how to program the computer to generate stuff that is now being hand-crafted by artists. This would reduce development costs (once the technology is in place) and it would allow things that are now all but impossible in many engines (like dynamically changing the environment).

I've used decent VR headsets and actually the advantage of having screens only inches from your face is that you then don't need to wear glasses to use them
Re: News - Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox 720 won’t be a great leap forward
Oh god, not more peripherals please!
It feels like for the past ten years we've been bombarded with ridiculous add-ons for consoles to try and make our games feel more interactive, and it only ever leads to a more limited experience.
I yearn for the days when an updated console meant a huge leap forward in sound, graphics and possible gameplay mechanics.

rage is a mess of a failure , of course thats subjective to personal opinion.
doom 3? tis 8 years old now and has had no support for 5 years (and looks and plays like it) , quake 4 was 2005.
ok so maybe not quite 10 years - but 7 then (as i really dont count rage as AAA at all)
Re: News - Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox 720 won’t be a great leap forward
BTW out of interest, anyone managed to get Kinect to detect you when sat down?
