No Windows Home Server. Thats annoying. I was looking to get one soon once my budget allows. I wonder what Microsoft expects home users to use? Linux?
Re: News - Microsoft to kill SBS and WHS in Windows Server 2012 release
Well they effectively killed WHS when they moved from v1 losing Drive extender and having silly 2TB limits.
Isn't essentials basically SBS - assuming it includes exchange.
Re: News - Microsoft to kill SBS and WHS in Windows Server 2012 release
Why sell something people want, when you have sell them something much more expensive.
WAHFSMSP (Windows Azure Hyper Fighting Small Business Synergy Platform) is whatever they'll call the replacement. £50 pm/ kerching.
Re: News - Microsoft to kill SBS and WHS in Windows Server 2012 release
I don't think I know a single person who owns a legit copy of windows server for home use.
People either pirate or user nix variants, the prices are just redonkulous.
Oh before everyone jumps on me yes I know there is a legitimate market and userbase out there for what they offer, just a 2c offering on a web forum...

What's wrong with Linux - there's a lot of well respected NAS distros, like OpenFiler. :p
If WHS has been dropped then maybe there'll be some special deals on the current WHS systems. So there's an upside.
Re: News - Microsoft to kill SBS and WHS in Windows Server 2012 release
gutted. Not a huge fan of whs 2011, but thought the idea was good...
Will have to get into linux then - or stick with a msdn version of 2008r2
Re: News - Microsoft to kill SBS and WHS in Windows Server 2012 release
I'm more worried by the removal of Exchange from the SBS style version, for many small companies who are used to being able to host a basic Exchange server without the added expense of actually purchasing Exchange.
Could never recomend a cloud based solution for any company, even for something as internet required as email, too many "what if's" to consider for security purposes.

That's why a lot of very clever folks (and no - I'm not suggesting for a femtosecond that this categorisation doesn't apply to you) are looking very hard at security. I've seen that both IBM and HP have been mooting "cloud solutions" for government contracts, so security etc are going to be uppermost in consideration.
Remember we're still at early days with "the cloud" - although I know one or two folks that have gone with that and seem happy with it.
Re: News - Microsoft to kill SBS and WHS in Windows Server 2012 release
Thing about the cloud is I've a nice 1gb network to my WHS.
My internet is only 80mbits.
Unlikely to get upstream above 50mbits anytime before 2015.
I don't want to go cloud :(
Re: News - Microsoft to kill SBS and WHS in Windows Server 2012 release
Genuine question; what can WHS do that can't be done in W8 (Pro?) anyway?
Seems like a non-story to me tbh, but maybe my requirements are just too limited.

@McPhee backups of other clients... I have a laptop and a desktop that are backed up completely by my microserver running whs

Perhaps I'm missing something (never used WHS) but I could back up to my W7 server when it was running. My laptop and desktop had complete installation images hosted on the "server", ones I could even restore from to a new disk using the Windows installer.
Re: News - Microsoft to kill SBS and WHS in Windows Server 2012 release
WHS did make that kind of stuff fairly easy.
As far as the Mail side of things go - we've been using hosted mail solutions for a long time - what else do you think Hotmail is ?
With a client side caching , a loss of internet connectivity isn't really going to affect you , as you wouln't be able to send mails anyways.
So for a small business , which is going to be worse : hosting your mail in a secure DC in the middle of nowhere , or on a little box under the desk which can get stolen. you have to also then worry about backups , which is something that most SBS customer want to forget about. Many would use a cloud based backup system if they do , so the problem is just the same.
