Thing is if they bring to market some giant windows 8 PC screen type thing, I can see companies buying it for their conference rooms.

However interactive whiteboards I find distracting if I'm giving a presentation, the temptation to start saying "Well the weather for the whole area will continue much the same as the past few days. Temperatures seventeen centigrade, that's forty-nine Fahrenheit." because you know how un-productive these things are.

1920x1080 on an 82" display? Any closer than 5m and it will just look like Tetris.

I thought that but then reconsidered when I remembered that my ~100" projector pushing out just 720p looks good at a distance of about 3m. If you look closely you can see individual pixels at this distance, though make it 1080p and there wouldn't be that problem, especially when you drop the screen size by 20". Would be perfectly usable from ~1.5-2m IMO, best from 3m backwards.

How do you propose users use the touch screen from ~1.5-2m?

When I say perfectly usable, I mean 'looks pretty'. Still usable by e.g. a presenter and looking good to the audience.

    But yes, increasingly pointless.

I'm seriously against this touch-screen craze that is going on right now - I can accept it on a phone but why oh why would I want my PC monitor, TV or Laptop screen to be covered in finger prints?! and, my fingers aren't transparent so selecting text or other such actions would be a nightmare. IMO I think tech like this: http://hexus.net/ce/news/gadgets/40605-softkinectic-ds325-finger-tracking-kinect-competitor-shows-up/ should be developed more so that the experience is similar to touch-screen but without all the drawbacks.

I completely agree with most of what you said

The finger transparency isn't a problem - selecting text on a Window Phone 7 for instance can be done without obscuring the text you need to select.
