The sense of entitlement some people have is just unbelievable. That level of moaning because they have been "cheated" from a whole 75 pence.
I can barely imagine how demoralised Madfinger Games must feel right now.

Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
Just like to say that I paid for it and I think it's a shame that there's so much piracy with even such a low price BUT I would ask how they arrived at said figure.

It IS annoying (and I'm one of the folks who happily paid the 75p - actually I'd have paid a lot more to not have any IAP's - say £10) to feel that you've paid for something that a lot of folks are now getting for nothing. So don't trot out that "you're a cheapskate" nonsense - it's not the amount it's the principle! :p
Actually pseudo joking aside, it's the pirates that I'm a LOT more angry at - heck 75p (or whatever the dollar/cent equivalent is) doesn't buy you more than a choccie bar these days, and some folks begrudge even that. :censored:
I'm lead to wonder though whether app developers are also being a little bit lazy. I've certainly had Android apps that were pretty firmly locked to one device, and you had to "deactivate" that install to be able to migrate it to another one. So if one company can do it, then surely others can too. Although it would mean that you'd have to get the software and buy a license key as two operations I guess, but I'm sure that there's a way to streamline that too. Or allow you to download the software, but you then have to register it (in app) and the app checks (every few startups) whether you're on the same device and aborts if you aren't.
Game's not bad either (Galaxy SIII for me) although I've spotted a couple of horrendous bugs in the version I got (for which there's since been a patch - maybe quashing the problems I found). Only downside is that it drains your battery pretty horribly.

`people` will complain even when its pirated......
-
Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
"OMG!" it was 75p but is now FREE! Then people moan they spent 75p to help dev' a game. Final proof many gamers have more teeth than I.Q.
-
Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
I feel 79p is a decent price. Those who think they lost out on 79p - Seriously ? You can find 79 x 1p on any high street over an hour. Come, I will give you 79p!
-
Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
I think some of the issue here was disabling some features and keeping them just for tegra 3. A lot of people were finding pre patched apks to download that reenabled the ultra high settings so they could get all the graphics on their s3 etc. that was more than capable of anything from the tegra 3 camp.

Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
I've seen comments on TPB complaining about cracked copies of full price games that they downloaded for free.
I can't believe the amount of bitching that goes on. Someone is putting stuff out there hoping to make a living, and they have spent days, weeks, even months putting together something like this, and then counted on selling lots of them to make some money out of their talent.
People who complain about losing 75p need to wake up. Open source software is very good, and free software like UBUNTU or open office are great, but people who develop these things don;t do it for free. They're not millionaires sat around with nothing to do and game writing skills... Often there are other revenue streams.
Excellent review sites like HEXUS.NET are around to inform the market about the quality of a purchase. Those who paid 75p for the software probably read a review about it first, then downloaded it, so they obviously thought that it was worth gambling 75p on. The licensing model changed because some people don;t want to play the game and people downloaded it. Play the game and enjoy it - what else can you do that keeps you entertained.... for 75p!
Simply people moaning for the sake of it. Grow up!
-
Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
Kinda sucks that people complain about having to support developers. I mean sure I'd be bummed a little, but less so for something as little as 79p and knowing that I helped contribute to the development of the game.
-
Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
will everyone please stop being so self righteous and whining about pirates. no games company has ever droped the price of a game to free becuase of pirates, never have and never will.
the reason this game is now free is becuase they make their money from the in app purchases. and charging a quid for this game only stood in the way of that. they tried to get paid at both ends, they failed, they are now cutting their losses, a smart move.
if you dont believe me look at all the other games on android, each of them get pirated just as much if not more and do they drop their price? no becuase if the game wasnt based on a IAP system to start with it would cost more money to either change it to one or put adverts in then it would to just keep it at that price and keep some money coming in.

Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
79p is so cheap it's practically free for something like this. As has been said, most people would spend that on a chocolate bar, which is obviously a one-use only thing.. it's the same mentality that objects to paying £40 for an operating system, despite it being something they will use almost every day for several years.
Edit: My Firewall being silly, not the app :p

It sickens me how people feel they can rip off the hard work of others rather than paying such a small amount for something that'll probably provide several hours of entertainment. And yet, you'd be hard pressed to find someone who'd complain about paying even triple that price for a pint of beer that'll last 30 minutes in the pub.

Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
Yeah, I don't buy this reasoning that they've made it free due to piracy. I don't know the ins and outs of this developer or the game, or the politics possibly involved, but really this "we made it free because it was pirated so much" smells of BS. Surely every game and paid app has a similar level or piracy (I have no idea what the statistics are for piracy on Android to be fair) unless they've specifically done something to increase piracy (someone mentioned something about cutting out certain features?).
On the wider issue of Android piracy, I wonder if maybe it's just the fact that people aren't so invested in smartphone apps yet to justify paying, even when it's cheap? I know that sounds incredibly cheap for things priced under £1, but I've noticed that without even thinking if I see an app/game isn't free, I'll just lose any potential interest in it instantly (although I don't pirate it either), even though I could just pay for it easily (I have no problem paying for expensive software for Windows and have hundreds of games on Steam). Maybe that'll change in time once people feel more invested in the platform and that purchases are worthwhile.
-
Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
I can understand the moaning. I bought grabatron during the play store launch sales for a similar amount only to find the game going freemium about 2 weeks later - which made the game a lot harder to play. I feel like that sale was very cheeky as they must have know it was going to be 'free' in a few weeks.

Why not? The reasoning is pretty simple: we put it out at a low price, but few are paying it, might as well make it free and hope that in-app purchases makes makes us more money as a result.
Games that don't have IAP can't easily follow this model. It's clear that more developers will move towards the "free to play" (IAP) model because that's apparently what works.
I think that part of the reason for rampant piracy is, apart from being easy on the Android, that more young people play on smartphones while PC gaming (which also still has rampant piracy) has some more mature gamers.

For balance, piracy if anything is even easier on iOS (cydia)

Yes, but what percentage of real iPhone users jailbreak their phones these days? Not enough for most iOS developers to care.
I am highly sceptical that the reason for the price drop has anything to do with piracy. It's a cheap pr stunt.

It's surely a given that the IAP's is going to make them more money than the initial 75p "purchase" price. Especially given that - judging on comments elsewhere - some of the IAP is actually essential if you want to get anywhere deep into the game. In which case, I'd regard that as just as false/flawed as Activision's Elit3 scheme.

Oooh, you must really enjoy being flamed - why didn't you rephrase that as "cheap-skate freeloading students" and have done with it! ;)
You've got half a point there - there's an expectation that a free OS (which Android is) will also have free apps. Same deal with Linux systems. So it's then a bit of a wrench to suddenly find that shiny new app is going to cost you real money. Interestingly I'm also hearing grumbles from iPhoners that "the app store is getting very expensive" - mainly (as far as I can tell) because there's more paid-for content in the IAS compared to the ad-heavy Google Play one.
I'm an old-fart, and an ex-developer myself, so I'm quite content to pay upfront for my content, in preference to IAP's. So unless Dead Trigger has some kind of mega "give me all IAP content" pack then I think it and I will shortly have a parting of the ways. Especially since us non-Tegra3 owners seem to be regarded as an underclass for no good reason.

Eh, I'm not so sure about that. I don't think the average user factors in - or cares - about the price of the OS. You're buying a phone/device rather than the operating system, and buying an Android device is basically indistinguishable from buying an iOS device so the user expectation should be the same in that regard.

It would be an interesting study to see how many "Android" phone users have any idea what Android is and if they know there phone is running it.

You could argue the same about sideloading and you need to root to install some stuff too. Jailbreaking is (perhaps more) widely known about and trivial to do (and there are far more reasons to do that on iOS because it's so insanely restrictive). The reasons why most developers don't care is simple - cheap micro transaction style apps don't worry most people. The majority click and pay for stuff because it's zero hassle and neglible cost. I was amazed at how easy piracy was on my iPad though - apps like installous and cydia offer you pretty much everything - and ease is key. Why do you buy games on Steam, rather than via cheaper mailorder, or just pirate them? It's incredibly popular despite the apparent industry killing piracy that plagues the platform. So it's either because it's really easy (and offers some nice extras) to use or that people aren't necessarily bad or a combination of both :)

They wouldn't know how it works, or what it's based on etc but then why would they? Even the most technically bereft people I know with Smartphones know about "android" even if they're using exactly 1% of the phone's functionality.

Maybe it's just a local thing, but pretty much ALL of the local phone shops have been pushing the Galaxy S3 as "running the latest version of Android" - which I'm assuming they wouldn't do if Joe Punter comes in and goes "what the eff's this 'Android' fing you keep talkin' about?". ;) CPW especially were running "promotions" that pushed (hard) that Play carries "a majority of free apps".
Likewise, it's something that magazines like "Android User" (which is widely available - e.g. my local [backwater] Sainsbury's carries it) cover. And I'm sure it's been widely reported elsewhere - BBC Click for example.
Then again, I'm going to point out the very obvious - if you're talking about folks pirating DT then it's likely that they're going to have a higher level of knowledge - e.g. to be able to disable the "no 3rd party installs" protection and then find a suitable dodgy website with the apk on it, and subsequently install it. In which case, they will undoubted have heard of the background to Android.
Heck, even primary school kids know the difference between a phone that's got the iTunes app store v's one with Google Play on it. Okay, mainly down to the IAS user having to pay for Angry Birds whereas the Play user gets it for nowt, but the distinction is still there.

I'm still doubtful there's much - if any - distinction between iOS and Android in terms of Android being free and therefore expecting the apps to be free too. Whichever phone you buy the cost of the OS isn't an issue; you pay for the phone overall (or more likely you pay a monthly contract that includes the phone) and that's that. The scenario is so opaque that you might as well say iOS is free too.
Edit: And Windows Phone for that matter. I should have included it as well as iOS as the exact same scenario applies, but almost forgot it existed.

Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
Whatever the reasons for the change in pricing, I had never heard of this game before. Now I've gone and downloaded it and found it to be excellent. I'd have gladly paid 79p for this game.
I will probably get an IAP just so the Dev get a little something back. They clearly invested a lot of time making this game... even if the English is chucklesomely bad on occasions :)
I did the same with Robotek and Radient Defense, both of which I bough IAP (as the game was free to start with).
Plus, my gripe is with those who are whining about "losing" 79p. They should be thinking "good for me for supporting a very good developer".

I heard about it on an Android podcast - think it was one of the Android Central ones actually. Personally I think the sub-£1 price was a mistake - I would have been quite happy to pay £2-3, (although if it subsequently went freeware then I'd have been a bit miffed).

Likewise, I'll probably also do an IAP or two - just as long as they're not "taking the pi**" - e.g. someone else was saying that they'd heard a Saiga-style shotgun was $2 by itself, (I've not checked!). Personally speaking if it costs more than $30 to buy all the DLC then it's overpriced.
As you rightly say - if smartphones and tablets are the new games machines, then we MUST encourage good developers to develop for our platform(s) of choice. I've already bought stuff from the TegraZone in the past, and probably would have continued to do so, but for the fact that most "good" content seems to be T3 only these days.
Have you managed to get stuck in a wall yet? I've managed that trick on at least three occasions - although I've not retried it since the recent (large!) patch.

Indeed. It's the same principle as other goods anyway. e.g. You stop at a bakery on the way to work in the morning and buy a donut for £1, on the way home in the afternoon you notice the same bakery having not sold enough of the donuts during the day is trying to offload them for 10p each. Do you piss and moan about your "wasted" 90p or do you just carry on with life realising these things happen, and the price you pay for a good is liable to change due to market forces at any given time.

The difference is that Jailbreaking has some real downsides and hassle whereas sideloading is very simple and low risk. I cannot think of a single iPhone I've seen in the last 2years that has been jailbroken. Thats from a fairly broad range of clients. I've jailbroken in the original iPhone and 3g era, but I've not seen the point for a long time. Maybe I'm getting lazy in my old age hehe :D
EDIT:
I've tried to find some hard figures on the respective scale of piracy on the two platforms. I don't think you can ever get a precise figure but this article here quoted in the article http://www.develop-online.net/news/3...an-iOS-edition Seems to suggest that piracy on this particular game is 2300% higher on android platform. I can't seem to find anyone else giving real figures. Or that of the amount of jailbroken devices in use.

I don't think people actually see those sort of things. There is so many stickers and branding on devices that most seem to tune them out. The conversation I usually have is, oh I wanted an iPhone, but it was too much so I got this instead.
With the iPhone it's one brand and one name. Really easy for that to stick in peoples heads over a crowded market. Studies have shown many times now that consumers hate too much choice.

Well i'll take you at your word but I find it mind numbingly easy to do and I instantly wanted to do it because I couldn't change anything. Not sure what risks I had there but it was a single click process via the desktop so not really too bad :) I'd still expect people to want help with sideloading - after all it's copying files by hand etc versus well developed pirate store apps. I'm not arguing that either isn't easy just that piracy on iOS is just as rampant (and if you look for iOS apps online there stacks of hacked stuff anyway). Both are popular, go figure!

That's reasonable but people I talk to are aware they've got 'android' - just not to any depth. It's well known in itself and well promoted.

I don't dispute the power of the Apple moniker in the marketplace but I do think now people are making other choices out of either boredom with iOS or actually because they do want a bit of choice. Too much bad yeah... but Apple is sort of 'just one choice' ;) The problem they have is sustaining absolute supremacy - each iPhone has to be amazing or people will be disappointed - and that's just not possible given how mature Android is (4.1 is wonderful) and how good some of the phones are now (SGS2 really kicked that off for me).

Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
Its a big PR stunt, personally I would never consider buying anything with in app purchasing as I dont like the fact I could pay £x and then have to pay even more just to use it fully.
I avoided this game as it was known for IAP so i didnt want to fork up cash for it, when it went free i tried it and it was very laggy on my O2x but was ok. I would be happy paying a few quid for it but I wouldnt be happy having IAP aswell as the low purchase price.
I still dont understand why people would pirate it for just that £0.75 but if it avoids IAP i guess thats the incentive... I wouldnt say piracy is really that bad but it could be better. I dont care about pirates, its to cheap for applications on mobile devices and if it is really expensive i just wont use it.
I think piracy is rife on both mobile operating systems but thats because its pretty easy to do on both platforms. Theres more Android devices out there so of course there will be more piracy, its hard to get any true figures anyway and since Android devices cover every price point you will find alot of people wont buy it because they have "no money", bollocks really as piracy is piracy but it happens unfortunately, it helps i guess (in a bad way!).
As soon as JB gets put on every android device piracy will be heavily reduced and probably less than Apple.

Re: News - Piracy forced Dead Trigger Android to go free instead of 79p
Out of interest I'm not sure on how many countries the Google play store takes payment from? Could that be a major cause of piracy on android? If you cannot pay for it there is only one choice?
Edit , found a list 129 or so countries: https://support.google.com/googlepla...&answer=143779
IOS is over 150 so I doubt it will account for too much difference between the two platforms.

Guilty as charged m'lud - although the " :p " was there to indicate that I was saying with tongue firmly in cheek. I'll state this clearly, if the game's good then I've no problem with the idea of paying £5, £10 or even £15 for it, (sorry, but £20+ means that it's got to be beyond reproach in my book), and I actually find the idea that some ... "persons" ... decide that paying <80p for what is actually an okay title is too much and decide to steal it instead is beyond the pale.

Hmm, I managed to miss out on that "Economics 101" class. ;)
Joking aside, there's been comments elsewhere that Madfinger either always intended DT to be "free+IAP" and that the niggling cost was them just "chancing their arm". If that's the case then they've been extremely cynical. And there's the other comment that I took note of - namely that there would have always been folks (like me) who would have been content to pay. So by $0ing it Madfinger have actually prevented themselves getting some (minor) revenue that they would have otherwise got - cutting their nose off to spite their face?
I'm not sure what the truth is here actually - Madfinger's PR machine certainly seems to have been very effective at getting the message that "we've been ripped off" out there. A person more suspicious than I am could perhaps ascribe other motives to it....

Mate of mine just got SGSIII, full of apps - needless to say none of them were purchased legally, pirate copies of silly Angry Birds even...
Is this where Android is heading? iOS can be jailbroken but unsure on pirate content.

And all his data is probably being sent via China to extract passwords and bank details. Risky business...

Economics 102. Selling things creates overheads, which then have to be paid for.

Erm, I'd be VERY, VERY dubious then. That much yo-ho loot yells "also contains trojans and malware" to me. I'd definitely flash that back to stock before putting ANY of my data on it.
And why the heck does ANYONE bother to pirate Angry Birds - I just checked and you can get every single edition (free and the few paid Premium/HD ones) and the latest game - Amazing Alex - for less than the price of T3 magazine.
Maybe it IS time that the ants or dolphins took over ...

Scottish education - we get it in '101. Especially as Adam Smith was a local lad... ;)

Aha. The entitlement to abuse someone who offers an alternative point of view, that questions a belief established personally, irrespective of whether such a view is right, wrong or just different ;)

You've got half a point there - there's an expectation that a free OS (which Android is) will also have free apps.
Three quarters of a point, I would say. Children and young adults have a different view of the World due to both nature and nurture. Whilst we can only speak in generalities here, generally adolescents are (compared to mature adults) at a different stage of emotional development, lacking the circumspect consideration which can only come with greater experience. I would suggest that young adults may well struggle to realistically value software, because they have yet to decide a realistic value for their own time and expertise.

I'm an old-fart, and an ex-developer myself, so I'm quite content to pay upfront for my content, in preference to IAP's.
I don't like to refer to myself as an old fart but am content in the knowledge younger people probably do.
I am fine with DLC which enhances or adds peripheral functionality as that's a choice. I hate IAPs which give no clue as to what the true cost to use the damn thing will be.
IAPs are the naughty schoolboy model, it seems to me. If you will not see reason and pay up, we are going to cane you!
Oh dear I guess I am showing my age again there then

I tried it out. The touch-screen controls are so awful I just gave up within about 10 minutes. In every other respect, it looked pretty decent. I tried with a wired Xbox360 controller, but no joy. I was pretty surprised it didn't work with a controller, given that ShadowGun worked just fine with one.
I'm amused that so many people think the graphics are "console quality". I don't own an Xbox 360 or a PS3, but to me the graphics look significantly worse than the original Xbox could produce (although admittedly the resolution is a lot higher).

This app is now free on iOS, so what about the released free on Android due to piracy statement?

Although, as I said above, the conspiracy theorists would have us believe that they always intended to go down this route, and did the piracy story to get some "free" PR. I'm either too naive, or not cynical enough, to believe that is the case.

I was surprised it became free. I would've bought it if it didn't.
I still can't believe people pirated a 75p game though. The usual "I can't afford it" excuse just don't apply here.

Can someone recommend a decent wireless controller that'll work with non rooted tablets?

Try a Google search for "android six axis without root" and there seems to be a good deal of discussion/information on that subject. From my cursory (<1 minute) inspection if you're on Honeycomb (or even worse GB!) then you're probably out of luck.
Personally, I'd just "root that sucka" and use the six-axis controller software that everyone seems to rate. I'm just about to root my Asus Transformer so I can use the second-hand PS3 controller I bought for DT.
And I disagree with Madfinger - yes you can probably play DT without any DLC, but to do so you either need the reflexes of a ninja or enjoy pushing your car to work to save petrol. I figure £5-10 worth of DLC is pretty much required to get into that game. I ended up doing a back to back comparison of that game on my phone (no DLC) versus the tablet (bought some gold so I could level up a weapon or two) - and I'm about twice the way through on the tablet.
