the new layout is awesome, this is what "metro" is great at, its clean simple and useful... even better than gmail! Now it just needs wide support, need to use it more but so far excellent!.

Mine still looks the old fashioned way ... so did Microsoft abandon it or did I opt out ?
You have to opt in. I'd give it a chance before saying "no" to it. I like it, quite a lot. But I don't like free email services, they cost too much imho.

Doesn't that then mean that you've got to go around all those sites that use your Hotmail account and update them to use the new (Outlook) one? Sounds like a lot of faff to me for the (dubious?) pleasure of using a Metro UI.

Although if Outlook.com offers IMAP then I'll sign up like a shot.

Yep. It took a while, but Hotmail app on android is now working, although I'm sure it's not working quite correctly, and Windows Live Mail is now working as well, but it took a few goes. Overall, I'm underwhelmed. I wish I'd stuck with my hotmail address...

BBC reported they had 1m signup within first 6 hours.

Can you login via existing hotmail account and add an outlook alias under it so it doesn't change anything yet?

    I believe so.

Infact I've just done that, your original account is the one you have to sign in with though still. On this occasion I think it would have been a good idea to allow you to use it as the main account as some of are still signing with names that are more appropriate for teenagers.

If you go to www.outlook.com and sign in with your main hotmail account you will enter your inbox with the new interface. Once there click the cog next to your name in the top right hand corner and from the drop down menu select "More email settings"; this will take you to a screen with various links, under the section labelled "Managing your account" you'll find a link "Create a Outlook alias" which I think will do what you want.

I choose the option below the one mentioned above: "Rename your email address"; what happened for me was the new address I requested became my primary account login and my old address I could choose to filter into a folder or leave entering my new inbox; all my settings and old profile remained the same.

Re: News - Hotmail to be replaced by Outlook.com

nope, sorry, pass.. Tried this supposed 'new' interface and it looks like something I would expect to have used 10 years ago. The gmail interface is fast and gives me all my features and extras I want.

This outlook.com interface is too simple and the real features are buried in menus. Have you seen the settings window? What a laundry list.. I just fell asleep trying to weed through it all.

Re: News - Hotmail to be replaced by Outlook.com

I transferred to it some time ago, not realising that my Hotmail would be completely replaced by it.

I think it looks HORRIBLE - an absolute abomination.
I don't even care what it does or doesn't do - its appearance is so utterly repellent.
Vile colour scheme, giant fonts - more suited to primary school children than adults.
Thank goodness I managed to find a way to revert to my Hotmail, though I sweated for a while, struggling to discover how to do it.

Re: News - Hotmail to be replaced by Outlook.com

Good luck with that... I got my hotmail hacked a while back and proving my identity on a 7+ year old email account was nion impossible... I gave up and haven't been able to use msn since. Can't be bothered re adding everyone to a new account when I can just use facebook now instead

been using Gmail for a few years now too, and yet to have a single issue...
