Re: News - Acer: Windows 8 won’t bring “explosive growth” in October
Why should we invest in a new operating system when we have just got into working with windows 7, Very bad move on Microsoft's side of the business sector or is it just aimed at consumers that want the next new fashion of OPS.....
Nope i am sticking with Windows 7 as Windows 8 has nothing to offer me only loads of greif and pain in the A** software compatabilty problems...
If only Linux could make it possible for me to play all my windows based games on linux without the need for emulators then linux it would be......
If i was Acer's MD i would say to MS stick it where the sun don't shine sonny boy windows 7 is still strong........

Er, hello... There's 100% software compatibility...
Re: News - Acer: Windows 8 won’t bring “explosive growth” in October
Not that I'm disagreeing with the comment, but "CEO of company that is ****ed off at microsoft talks down the upcoming microsoft launch that they've dropped out of" is hardly earth-shattering news, any more than "MS exec declares that win 8 will be the biggest and best thing to happen to computers since the command prompt" type hyperbole.
A major, (relatively) neutral player saying thsi sort of thing might have more credence.
Meanwhile I think for MS - they either sell the 'package' of phone/tablet/(laptop and desktop) or it will struggle for the reasons c12038 (interesting choice of name btw) says above. Re: software/hardware compatibility issues - so far, I may just be lucky, but all my programs, peripheral and even games, from my Vista and Win7 computers have been plug n'play and (touch wood) trouble free on Windows 8 preview release. While I don't see this as a strong incentive for people to migrate alone, it would mean the product wouldn't b coming with the sort of hazard label Vista deserved for the first 6 months after release...
Re: News - Acer: Windows 8 won’t bring “explosive growth” in October
Acer is just peed off cause they cant compete, their products are shoddy and cheap but even their expensive stuff are cheap and nasty, all their stuff has died so I avoid acer like the plague, of course Acer will be peed cause if microsoft launch a cheap tablet it will destroy them as it will be amazing (if its the surface) and if its expensive they will have to compete on price, and again they will have the issue of providing a quality product :P.
Acer are useless, if it was Asus saying something like this then id actually take it as potentially important info!.

+1 on this - I know fairly large orgs who have just switched to Windows7, so I can imagine that they'll not even be thinking of Windows8 yet. And as to Linux, I'm in the same boat as you - apart from games (and Photoshop Express) - I could switch to Linux full time, instead of 90%+ as it is at the moment. My attitude to Windows8 is:

And I've no wish to be labelled as the second kind of fool! And to my mind Windows7 isn't "old", (so I escape being labelled as the other kind of fool - unlike the folks still clinging to XP perhaps)

I'll kind of agree - ALL the Acer computers I've dealt with (or bought) have developed hardware faults (usually screen/video related). On the other hand I've a relative who got an Acer monitor and it's quite good - maybe it was just rebadged? ;)
Re: News - Acer: Windows 8 won’t bring “explosive growth” in October
Agreed, it won't see growth in business for a while, that was never the plan, where it has the potential to boom is tablets. I find it bizarre, that Acer, who are one of the OEMs, are basically doing the proverbial on their doorstep, surely a bit of optimism would work positively for them?
Re: News - Acer: Windows 8 won’t bring “explosive growth” in October
I'd disagree with the ACER hate. I had an ACER laptop that was great. I got bluray and dedicated graphics for the price other manufactures wanted for a similar spec laptop without the bluray and GPU. I won't say the build quality was quite as good but I took care of it and it worked fine. My sisters still got it and uses it daily. I think ACER give great spec for the price - you just need to treat them with a little more care.
I also understand ACER point of view. Why spend all that cash developing such a product when there is no evidence WinRT will make any impact against ipad sales. Why not let others trail blaze and join the band wagon if it works (And stick with Android if it doesn't!).
Re: News - Acer: Windows 8 won’t bring “explosive growth” in October
Even the picture at the top of the article shows the problem with Windows 8 on a desktop - even if my desktop had touch (which it does not) I would need to stretch to reach it. Same problem with my home PC.
So Windows 8 should be called "not designed for business".
I guess like VIsta we should all wait for Windows 9
Re: News - Acer: Windows 8 won’t bring “explosive growth” in October
Tbh the Acer CEO seems to do nothing but whine. All I have heard about recently is him yapping on about one thing or another. I seriously wish he would just stfu and try and build innovative products instead of crying at other companies.

But we all agree that Windows 7 is a great OS, and it took them until now to actually adopt it.
The fact that large organisations aren't interested is irrelevant - if they waited for them to care they'd never release an OS at all. Don't see how they've done anything wrong by releasing 8 (Metro argument is another topic altogether).
Re: News - Acer: Windows 8 won’t bring “explosive growth” in October
Yeah, i think more options should definitely be more welcomed in any industry/market, besides, its only £15 quid and free if you purchased windows 7 within the time limit MS set, having said that, i also thing win8 is going to be a slow adoption, why? bcoz software will take time to catchup and the biggest grudge i have is; the software we use now on win7 (Paid for) will not work on win8 or vice versa.
Re: News - Acer: Windows 8 won’t bring “explosive growth” in October
Definitely getting the impression Acer and Microsoft have fallen out. They were quite positive about Windows 8 when they were demoing prototype products a few months back and their proposed product range was the most exciting of all the OEMs. Seemingly things have gone sour since then (over Surface, no doubt).
It's stupid of Acer really. Throwing a tantrum isn't going to stop Microsoft from releasing Surface. They should just get on with the hand they've been dealt - make the best of a bad situation.
Re: News - Acer: Windows 8 won’t bring “explosive growth” in October
I don't see me changing from W7. Don't see any advantage at all.
Re: News - Acer: Windows 8 won’t bring “explosive growth” in October
The only reason I might get windows 8 is so I can move my windows 7 home license to my netbook (get rid of starter)
Re: News - Acer: Windows 8 won’t bring “explosive growth” in October
I'd buy Windows 8... if I had a touch screen.
I don't have a touch screen because I find keyboard, mouse, XBox controller and MCE remote to be enough input devices.
...besides I don't get on very well with touch screens. The same goes for touch pads on laptops. I think you need a soul to use one. Which leads me to wonder why Bill Gates wants them?
