Re: News - Dell debuts three stunning additions to XPS series at IFA
Is it wrong that my first thought when I saw the XPS 27" all-in-one with Win 8 start screen was "that'd be great if you could make soft capacitive pellets and shoot them at the screen to select tiles ..." ?
Re: News - Dell debuts three stunning additions to XPS series at IFA
When I saw XPS 27 on the front page, I thought that it was either a typo for the XPS 17 , or the most unwieldy laptop ever (basically I thought it was all laptops). Is the screen exceptional for an all-in-one, or exceptional full stop (I am well behind when it comes to desktop components nowadays)?
Looks like the XPS 10 will go head to head with the Surface (RT version).
Re: News - Dell debuts three stunning additions to XPS series at IFA
Yeah, the big news here is the high density 27" panel, that's good news, as long as it's not just scaling like Retina, (my guess is it will be) "Quad HD" sounds like the best Dell's marketing could do!
The XPS10 looks really ugly IMO, too wide a bezel and the scale of the rounded corners just looks off. Might be just a bad photo angle for it.

1080p Full HD on a 12"?! Is this a typo, am I reading this right? Dell are actually releasing a device with a usable screen resolution?
Regardless, I hope those tablets have digitiser pen support.

27-inch Wide Quad HD Display
Really?
Is it actually a 3840x2160 monitor?
Somehow I don't quite believe it. If it's true.... damn I'd want one of them!!
Really like the sound of the 12" as well. I loved the idea of the Inspiron Duo the it was first touted, it seems this might be the right hardware for the concept.

That's how I read "Quad HD" too and considering how much free space there is left on it displaying "Modern UI" start screen it sure looks to be somewhere in the vicinity of that pixel count. Haven't got a clue why wouldn't they simply use "4K" instead, since it's now an official broadcast standard, so we don't have to wonder about its true resolution. Regardless, I'd want one and will be looking forward to 8K as well (I mostly write code and such, and I still find it incredible how much desktop space I could use. It seems it's never enough... scary really that I could find good use for 8K resolution for displaying mostly text files and am still quite happy with even 720p or even lower resolution movies that would seem thumbnail size on 8K screens at 1:1 LOL).

Well the 4K broadcast standard will never be called 4K... as it isn't real 4K :P
A true 4K resolution is 4096 wide as used in digital cinema production (although there are also slightly smaller variations, like 3996 wide). The "4K" broadcast standard will be twice the width and twice the depth of Full HD and called UHD (Ultra HD) although I'm sure some will like to use QuadHD for a while as everything seems to be Quad at the moment.

Spot on and thanks for correcting me ;) Yeah "quad" seems to be the next big word in the advertising vocabulary, limited as it might be :D

I'm sceptical too, a quick google reveals stuff like this: http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/30/d...io-running-w8/
How is 2560x1440 QuadHD? :O_o1:
Edit: Quote from comments at mobile.theverge.com: "People seem to think that Wide Quad HD is 4 times 1920 × 1080, ergo 3840 × 2160.
But it’s not, it’s mere 2560 × 1440 (or 4 times 1280×720) that you can see on every 27’’ monitor (except for the crappy FHD ones).
So there’s nothing special about this screen’s resolution.
The Verge should do its homework and not peddle misleading Dell marketing, which makes people believe it’s Quad HD, or near 4K".
