So apparently the 920 is going to be exclusive to EE (T-Mobile-Orange)

Probably not for long though, one would hope it's available on a sim free.

looking at it the 820 looks like a more appealing device, mostly because a tad smaller, It lacks the new camera tech but they've still given it a decent spec.

However, your assertion that an SDXC card needs to be formatted to FAT32 on the S3 is incorrect - I'm using the LH1 baseband and LG8 (official) ROM and the 64GB Sandisk uSDXC card that's in there was formatted as exFAT by Sandisk and I've seen no reason to change that. Just double checked with ASI and it's telling me that /mnt/extSdCard is type "exfat".

Although in triple checking it I did find a reference that exFAT support "disappeared" for the LF1 revision - but that stupidity seems to have been limited to folks running ROMs from Orange, (certainly I had no problems with that ROM revision with my SIM-free S3).
You're still in a land of luck. Anything other than FAT16 SDSC up to 2G and FAT32 SDHC up to 32G is in no way guaranteed to work - and you have no grounds to complain if it stops working or only partly works, if you use cards outside spec

With the utmost respect, if I'm in "a land of luck" then it's getting darned crowded. If you check out the S3 forums at xda you'll see a lot threads about using 64GB cards in the S3 - with some folks saying that Samsung have confirmed (unofficially) that this works fine.

Typical examples of the type of thread is http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...highlight=sdxc where NZtechfreq confirmed that 64GB card works, and http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1650997 which is a pretty lengthy discussion.

EDIT: No you are wrong - just found http://www.samsungmobilepress.com/20...ired-by-Nature which states
Memory: 16/ 32GB User memory (64GB available soon) + microSD slot (up to 64GB)
(my highlighting). As far as I know SDHC is limited to 32GB, so this is saying that SDXC is supported officially.
