You clearly have not used any other recent Android/Windows 7 or even blackberry phone...they all have features which transfer your data seamlessly....especially the Windows Phone 7

I hate Itunes, totally rubbish and boxed in. They improve phones but not the software to operate and interface with it.. poor from Apple

I don't know about the notes, but photos and documents are just files, so that should be a simple matter of drag 'n drop from one phone's directories to another. And contacts can be synced between iTunes and Google contacts easily enough.

No idea how it is done, never done it. However, with installed user bases in the hundreds of millions, I would say with some certainty that there will be either desktop tools or phone apps that will allow you to export and then import all that data. There will be literally millions of people that will want to do it in one direction or the other every year.

Re: News - Apple takes over 2 million iPhone 5 orders in 24 hours

I'd expect there to be solutions around, but I don't think it's unreasonable to think that not everyone is going to be comfortable with the process. While the risk of unnoticed bugs exist even when using official tools within the same platform, I'd argue that the risk could be greater when moving between platforms. The risk may be low, and we all know better than not back up first. But in the event where something goes wrong, it can be a wasted evening fixing it. Or worse yet, it is something subtle that goes unnoticed (e.g. email not copying over) until you have already started using the device for a few days.

And let's not forget any investment made in apps. I still do not see why people feel the need to call names just because others choose a different platform, or choose to stay with the platform they are used to when it more or less suits their needs (not directed at Funkstar - you know who you are). Tech enthusiasts may be willing to spend time, effort (and money depending on apps required) researching and switching to a platform that does "more", but I suspect that most modern smartphones are perfectly capable feature wise for 80% of the population.

I also think it's far too early to judge the iPhone 5's commercial success. With only one phone released per year, the anticipation is naturally higher than companies who release 2 phones per year. If only because I do not think there are that many people willing to switch phones twice a year. Not only that, the 4S was released after over a year, meaning that people on 4 or earlier had to wait over 2 years for the iPhone 5. 2M is a tiny amount compared to the amount of iPhone out there even excluding the 4S, and that remains true even if half the iPhone users suddenly decide to jump ship (unrealistic). Really, I don't think it's realistic to kill a momentum that quickly (that you don't get a few MMs pre-orders on the first day) under the circumstances no matter how much some of you may wish. Even if the iPhone 5 ends up selling less than the iPhone 4S, it won't become evident until the next quarter or the one after that.

Why buy a £600 iPhone when a £100 Android phone will take calls, surf the web and access the facebook app?

You haven't got the point from the discussion here. It;s like saying why buy a £100 Android phone when a £40 unknown brand can do the same.

You miss the point that people have different needs both from Specs and functionality. For me I wouldn't buy an Android phone that won't fit in my pocket, what is the point.. for me that is. I need something smaller and an iphone 4/5 is fine for me together with the Apps I use already.

People like Androids because it suits their needs, not because it's the best for everyone else

But - there are some good deals at the moment on the Iphone 5 and my phone contract is due next month.

Android annoys me now, its just not polished or feels finished.

Nokia/Windows - when ? How much ? no one knows.
The Galaxy nexus is excellent if you can stand only having 16gb. Otherwise the android experience is only really superb if you get yourself a custom rom.
